Ostensibly a quick read, this April #BOTM pick took me longer to get through than I expected. It‘s a dark book— it reminded me a bit of SHARP OBJECTS but without the balance & even more emphasis on addiction, abuse & an awkwardly inserted romantic plot. If I was from NE/SD, I‘m not sure I would enjoy this portrayal either… Providence‘s return to join the search for her mother did capture my interest but the conclusion wasn‘t satisfying to me.
I‘m a mood reader but couldn‘t get into this one and backspaced through my reasons because - spoilers. Suffice it to write, there was just too much miserableness for the MC. IE: something small but why was it necessary to repeatedly describe Providence‘s chosen state and city as a location as terrible as where she was raised (and where the story is set) - it was an unnecessary misery.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
This one was a heavy read but so good especially for a debut novel! Hope to see more from this author in the future 🤎
UNPUTDOWNABLE!! Another great thriller mystery that absolutely hooked me. A debut novel about family trauma, forgiveness, and survival, wrapped inside a suspenseful mystery.
Providence Byrd is a fighter! She returns home to search for her missing mother (even though her mother never really loved her) and faces the abusive father she‘s always feared, and the tension between her and her sisters is heartbreaking.
Well. I flew through this. The plot is maybe a little obvious but the entire ensemble cast of characters - esp the narrator - are so emotionally fleshed out, it‘s forgivable. I can picture this story as a movie or a play. It‘s heart-wrenching.
Happy Cozy Sunday! I was dreaming about this spicy hollandaise from one of my fave local spots all week so I indulged.
I like that more and more books are including a preface about potential triggers, normalizing compassion. This world needs it.
Started in on this today. #BOTM has it early - it‘s on shelves 4/22. It‘s sucked me right in.
I finished my most recent book last night and my April Book of the Months showed up today, so I decided I will dig right in and start this book.

Latest #BOTM (or as my work friend who also subscribes calls it “bottom” lol) has arrived!
Early release - it‘s out at the end of this month. I think I‘ll tackle it first after my current reads & an ARC from NetGalley out around the same time.
