Super-diversity is a term denoting a transformation of population patterns, especially arising from shifts in global mobility. Around the world over the past three decades, there have been increasing movements of people from more varied national, ethnic, linguistic and religious backgrounds; in addition, there has been a diversification of migration channels, legal statuses and conditions, gender and age ratios and forms of human capital. In light of complex new social formations, " Super-diversity" highlights the need for policymakers to recognize new conditions created by these changes and underlines the necessity for social scientists to rethink fundamental approaches to migration."

From @peanutnine: “There are a lot of reading challenges for 2022 planned but nothing with a diversity focus. I was thinking of having each month of the year dedicated to a certain heritage or culture or minority.

I will post the list of monthly prompts ahead of time so you can plan your year if that's your thing. Let me know if you would be interested in joining a challenge like this! I'd love your feedback“

I myself am probably maxed-out in the reading challenge department for 2017, but do have a look at this one with a diverse Canuck focus and such a pretty graphic, why don't you?

LeahBergen I'm not even going to look. 😂 7y
Donna_sBookMinute I can only handle two challenges. Maybe next year. 7y
Sue Looks interesting (and I can already tick off three) and I would need to do a bunch of research before doing the very specifically Canadian ones. I didn't know amnesty international had a book list though, I shall check that out. 😊 7y
DaydreamingBookworm I enjoy this. Maybe next year. Now I want to see some suggestions. 7y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders This is such an awesome graphic! I'm pretty sure I can use books plugged in for other challenges to fit this one too. #willtry? 7y

As a human being (and, therefore, as a consumer of books) I have a moral obligation to accept all other human beings regardless of race, creed, gender or orientation.

I take that obligation seriously and I try to read diversely without policing what I read. What I will NOT do is record the race, creed, gender or orientation of the authors I read.

Diversity is not a contest. I will not use people to score points.

jpmcwisemorgan I like what you have to say. I don't purposefully seek out a specific "type" of author, except for in a book club I belong to. In that matter, we do seek diversity in the voice of the author because we're discussing sustainability and the environment and there's a lot being said outside of the more mainstream story, if you will. 8y
Leelee.reads I hear what you are saying. I do think that people who post those stats are doing so as a way to promote authors belonging to historically underrepresented groups. It's a way to bring attention to the fact that traditionally, only white males received literary attention, and to celebrate the voices of those who were, for so long, only allowed to have others speak for them. 🙌🏾 8y

Hooked_on_books @Leelee.reads Ditto. I agree. 8y
GuiltyFeat @Leelee.reads I hear you and I understand the importance of that AND the perniciousness of white privilege. I just can't bring myself to put people I don't know into boxes I choose to suit some agenda a third party deems important. 8y

ValerieAndBooks 👍I think it's good enough to read/mention/review/discuss these books -- word of mouth provide powerful support in itself. 8y
LiteraryinLawrence Thanks for sharing that perspective. I can definitely see where you're coming from! 8y
