The Counterfeiters is a story of people moving in and out of an upperclass Paris setting in the early 20th century. The dialogues are witty, the relations realistic and underneath a lot is happening. The fact that the adolescents act too wise for their age, that homosexual feelings are never outspoken, and even that there it is a novel-within-a-novel: It all adds up to a great story in which all of the characters really come to life. #1001books
