On the Run
On the Run | Izai Amorim
13 posts | 4 read | 15 to read
New York City, early 1990s: a young, rich, and well-educated Central American man on the run from the police and Colombian drug dealers. He is accused of crimes he didn't commit. Ready to do what it takes to survive, Pablo ironically embraces the very drug trade that threatened his life in the first place. Who is he? What is he really capable of? The question of identity is at the heart of On the Run. More than a contemporary story of survival, it's a journey of self-discovery. Pablo's voice is funny, sometimes mean and merciless. He moves with nightmarish ease from recounting his adventures to recollecting his early life. Not always politically correct, On the Run gives you an insightful, twisted, humorous, and often disturbing view of conflicting worlds and beliefs: North and Latin America; black, brown, and white; rich and poor; rational and esoteric - and shows how they mix, match, and clash.

There's more than one #criminal in this book. It would be easier to count those who weren't criminals ❣ I loved this book.

I loved this book! (Our very own @Izai.Amorim will have to blush away). I couldn't put it down. It raises so many questions about right and wrong and identity. A good story, an unusual subject matter and I loved the ending.

LibrarianJen I totally need to bump this up on my TBR (restocking so it‘s on top). 6y
Izai.Amorim Thank you so much for your kind words! It really made my day! I haven‘t been around Litsy for quite a while, too many things happening... Then your tag brought me back to a wonderful review! I‘m very glad that you enjoyed the read. I also had great fun writing this novel. (Not everyone enjoys this kind of humor, I know...) My current project is much harder to write because it‘s not funny. 6y
MayJasper You are very welcome. It was really fascinating, intriguing and a compelling read. I didn't want to but I really liked Pablo and Douglas. But I loved the genuine hero Winston. The characters are still with me! Congratulations @Izai.Amorim on a great book. I gave it 5* on Goodreads. 6y

I just could not connect to the main character and I found the story a bit unbelievable. But I liked how the book explored what could happen to a privileged man who is being stripped off everything, even his identity and to survive he has to break bad. I liked the social commentary and how the events and friendship to someone who has undergone a similar journey, change the main character.

@Izai.Amorim Look what I finally bought and started reading! ;)

Izai.Amorim Wow! Thank you! I do hope you like it! 🙇🙇 7y
Anna40 @Izai.Amorim I'm halfway through your book. I can't really connect to the main character but I love the premise of lost identity and reinventing identity so I think I'm slowly starting to understand your book... I think :) 7y
Izai.Amorim @Anna40 Pablo is a spoiled brat, but he learns a lot on his journey, you'll see... I like Mad Dog better, he has style! The identity issue is very complex, I could cover only a few points. For example I find interesting how your red lines and your moral compass change according to the situation you're in. Like Mad Dog justifying dealing with 'everyone is doing it, only different kinds of drugs"... (edited) 7y
Anna40 @Izai.Amorim yes. I was wondering if you deliberately "wrote" the main character this way.. . Thanks for your insight! 7y

Thank you very much for your gifts @Izai.Amorim! I have not read any of these! I am thrilled to receive a book you have written, signed too. I love all the little extras. I have been after an unlined notebook for simply ages. Thank you again.

BookishMarginalia The Housekeeper and the Professor is amazing! I love the cover of @Izai.Amorim 's book, but the other one freaks me out! 💜 7y
TrishB @BookishMarginalia I really like the one that freaks you out! 😀 7y
MayJasper That Mephisto cover is quite challenging 😱😀 7y
Izai.Amorim Oh, you're very welcome! I hope you enjoy the books! It was a lot of fun getting the stuff. 7y
Izai.Amorim @BookishMarginalia Thanks, that's a street in downtown NYC. Thanks also for putting together #summersanta I know how much work that is. Mephisto by Klaus Mann is a very good read. It's about an actor in the Nazi era, he played Goethe's Faust, and that's what the cover is about. 7y

A journey of self discovery for Pablo, the literal man on the run! Drug dealing, hilarious adventures, conflicting belief systems, insightful comedy...what's not to like? And from our very own @Izai.Amorim ! Woohoo!

This book was so much fun. A wealthy Central American man is framed for murder and drug dealing. He runs to the only person he can think of who can help him - his best friend's cousin who is a hardened drug dealer. This is a journey to self for Pablo but my favourite component of the book is his often strained relationship with Mad Dog who isn't what you would expect. Full review at doddyaboutbooks.com with thanks to Netgalley and the author.

Izai.Amorim Thank you so much, Sue! 8y
