My 2020: A Beautiful Year! | Hifish Notebooks
post image

I‘m still playing around with different ways to look at my reading stats for the year, so I decided to make a bar graph of original publication date this year. I find both the quantity of new books and those few much older ones interesting. You can definitely see the influence of the #ShaksepeareReadalong in those orange and yellow boxes.

jenniferw88 Now I'm going to have to do this! 3y
squirrelbrain Great idea! What was the BCE one? 3y
inthegreensandblues Love this! 🤓 I'm also curious about the oldest ones. 3y

Daisey @jenniferw88 Lol! I know what you mean. I‘ve been considering how to do this for a while because I find the dot plot available in Goodreads interesting but not really clear. 3y
Daisey @squirrelbrain @inthegreensandblues The two BCE ones were listening to Emily Wilson‘s newer translation of The Odyssey and reading Aesop‘s Fables. 3y
squirrelbrain Oops I only saw one of them, but at least I guessed it might be The Odyssey! 3y
BayouGirl85 That‘s interesting. I may need to see how my 2020 reads look. 3y
Lcsmcat This is cool. Did you create the spreadsheet or find it somewhere? 3y
Daisey @BayouGirl85 Thanks! It is another interesting perspective! 3y
Daisey @Lcsmcat I created my own spreadsheet after considering a few others. There may very well be a simpler way to make this graph, but I copied and pasted my column info for each month and color coded with conditional formatting. 3y
Chrissyreadit Your graph is very satisfying to look at. So much information! 3y
TCLinrow This is really cool! I might give this a try 🤔😁 3y
Kenyazero What a fun stats graphic! 3y
Daisey @Chrissyreadit @TCLinrow @Kenyazero Thank you all! It‘s definitely a method I will be using again. 3y
JazzFeathers Lovely idea 😍 3y

I took some time today to look at my book stats for 2020. Listening to audiobooks the last few years has greatly increased my book count, especially my nonfiction numbers. I also appreciate seeing the sources off my books, and am so thankful for a couple great library systems.

Kathleenkelly Love the summary. Is there an app that helped you track this? 3y
Daisey @Kathleenkelly No, I use my own spreadsheet. I took ideas from Book Riot‘s and others I‘ve seen to build my own. 3y
Kathleenkelly @Daisey That‘s impressive! (edited) 3y

2020 is done ✔️ - phew!
I had better stats in 2019 🤷🏻‍♀️. And I feel like I attended better to my reading.

I‘m looking forward to a fresh start, and a better year all around.

I read a lot of good books this year! Decided to put my goal at 52 this time, and read slowly. I love to read, but I need to stop escaping into my books so much! 😅 Hoping that 2021 makes that a lot easier than 2020 did.

I did not read as many books for #ReadingEurope2020 as I had originally hoped, but I did read books written by authors from countries I had never read from before. Except for Midnight in Chernobyl, all were written by authors from the country represented, and except for Amok, all were set at least partially in the country represented. I also read more books by European authors, but they were duplicate countries.

BarbaraBB You read some great books! Which is the one upper right with the snow on the cover? (edited) 3y
Daisey @BarbaraBB The snowy one is Smilla‘s Sense of Snow, set in Denmark. 3y
slategreyskies I think Smilla‘s Sense of Snow is also a movie, but I may be remembering wrong. 3y

I read 30 more books from the #1001books list this year, plus 3 rereads of Austen novels that I did not count. This is just under my goal to average 3 per month but exactly the same number as last year. I read my #Reading1001 group #TBRTakedown book for every month of the year although not always within the month. Some of these also worked for #ReadingEurope2020, and I enjoyed reading Moby Dick with #LitsyBookClub.

Daisey @Elo_isa @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @mariaku21 Thank you! They did make for an interesting reading year. 3y
BarbaraBB Great year! I saw your Europe post earlier and thought ‘wow so many #1001books‘ but I see now that‘s no coincidence! I have yet to make my 1001 stats but have read less than you this year. 3y
Daisey @BarbaraBB Thanks! Yes, pretty much all of the planned Europe books were chosen from the #1001books list and most of the others were just lucky additions. (edited) 3y

14 books so far:
Jan - 5
Feb - 3
Mar -4
Apr - 2

May is Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month, so I am thinking of moving some Asian American authors to the top of my TBR stack. We'll see what happens. Hopefully I will get back some of my reading mojo soon.
