Pickpick

As usual I'm managing to sneak in one more book this month. I do think that the longer Holmes stories are weaker than the short ones, primarily because of the long expository flashbacks, Sir Arthur, just give me the deductions! Even so The Hound of the Baskervilles is wonderful and so are parts of the others. An extra joy are the annotations; fun, detailed, odd & covering all kinds of obsessive Holmesian theories and debates #AnnotatingSherlock

In contrast with the rather dubious connection in the last footnote it's interesting to know that ACD was an active campaigner against draconian Victorian divorce laws #AnnotatingSherlock

Andrew65 I think he was ahead of his times in so many ways. 7y

You learn something every day. Joseph Swan held a British patent for the carbon filament bulb in 1878 while Edison's was patented in 1879. As part of a copyright settlement Swan became a partner in the British works and the lightbulbs were called "Ediswans" until Edison bought Swan out. Ediswan is often "corrected" in the Hound of the Baskervilles but ACD was right! #AnnotatingSherlock

The experts take issue with one of the canon's most famous lines. I agree with Mr Clyne, it's obviously about dramatic effect "the footprints of a giant Cocker spaniel", indeed! ?? #AnnotatingSherlock

vivastory 😂😂The Cocker Spaniel of Baskerville doesn't have quite the same affect 7y

Have you ever wondered just how serious Sherlock Holmes was? Never fear, someone has broken down the statistics for you! (I love this annotated edition, it's thorough to the point of insanity) #AnnotatingSherlock

LeahBergen It sounds like it! 😂 7y
saresmoore Gasp! Moray, if my family asks, I will blame you for the sheer length of my Christmas wishlist this year. 7y
mjdowens Can someone show me what "twinkle" looks like??? 7y

Moray_Reads @saresmoore I can't recommend these enough. I particularly like that the annotations are "in-world" so they're fully invested in the lovely tradition that Holmes and Watson were real. Which they obviously were *cough* 7y
Moray_Reads @mjdowens I think of it as a lively sparkle in the eyes and maybe a hint of a smile 😉 7y
saresmoore OBVIOUSLY 7y
Sarah83 So great.🤗 How many books do you have about Sherlock? 7y
Moray_Reads @Sarah83 maybe 40-50 books? Unfortunately most of them are still stored at my parents' house so I only have a handful in my flat 😧 7y
Sarah83 Have you seen my Sherlock shelf? 😍 I think, I have quite as many as you. 😍 7y
Moray_Reads @Sarah83 I have loved your many Sherlock posts! They make me miss my own collection 7y
Sarah83 Can't you bring your Sherlock books to your flat? 7y
Moray_Reads @Sarah83 I don't have space for them but maybe it's time to rescue some of my favourites! 7y
Sarah83 Mhm. Or you take pictures, so you can look at them any time you want to. 7y
JazzFeathers I realised he's not the stern fellow we're accustomed to think about when l read a few of his short stories la summer. Should we blame thr actors? 7y
Moray_Reads @JazzFeathers I don't know. My favourite Holmes is Jeremy Brett and he plays the character with plenty of humour and even Benedict Cumberbatch's high-functioning sociopath version has a laugh or two. 7y
