The Widening Stain | W. Bolingbroke Johnson

Pickpick

This mystery classic had humor and some quirky characters. Published in #1942 , the setting is an academic library with librarian Gilda as the amateur sleuth. She‘s prickly, but with a flare that makes her entertaining. Johnson uses this book to softly poke fun at academia. A nice lighthearted mystery at a time where levity was needed. The audio took me awhile to get into, but I overall enjoyed this one. #192025

Thanks #NetGalley & the publisher

A library setting and a librarian sleuth. What‘s not to like? A lot, sadly. The author can‘t decide what he wants to do with the book — cozy mystery, hardboiled detective novel, police procedural interspersed with soft porn. Ambler, our hero, is not that memorable; his police friend, Cosgrove, is not bright; and the women are stereotypes. The narrator of the audio would be perfect if this were a Sam Spade novel, but it‘s not, so he‘s awkward.

I‘m really excited for The Paper Caper and eager to get Woman of Light off my shelf — either by reading or DNF‘ing! #bookspin

rockpools Good luck! A very important question: Is it you that I‘m friends with on DuoLingo? (I know it was a Litsy Rachel - just can‘t remember their Litsy name!) If it is you, I‘d love to know how come you‘re learning Scottish Gaelic. (If not, apologies for weird random questions!) 1mo
mrsmarch @rockpools LoL, that‘s meeeee! As for how come — I was bored with burnishing my Italian and keeping my French fresh, so I wanted a non Romance language. I figured the native language of my ancestors was a good place to start. 1mo
rockpools Honestly, I‘m a disaster at answering people (& social media generally) these days. Sorry! But so pleased I‘ve matched the mystery Duo person to a real Rachel 😊. That is so cool. I just started back again with Duo (as you may have gathered) and started Gaelic for the first time (before I took a peek to see what you were learning). Love it!My niece (age 4) has just started Gaelic-speaking nursery, so she‘s teaching me. Need all the help I can get! 4w
mrsmarch @rockpools I‘m sure my pronunciation is a nightmare, but the chances of me ever being in a place where I need spoken Gaelic are infinitely small. Writing/reading it suffice for me. I‘m actually keenly surprised how much I feel it shares with *French*. The Auld Alliance with France makes so much sense. Word order and some vocab overlap. Eaglais/église anyone? (edited) 4w

⭐️⭐️⭐️
These books are cute enough, but I really dislike the narrator. I like the mc and her family, but the mystery wasn't anything special.

A reread for me- read 4 yrs ago, but so far the stories are like new. Does not speak well for my powers of cognition & memory. Only read the first two stories, so maybe I will remember some more. #bibliomysteries

Some of these were very good, and I especially enjoyed the two Sherlockian tales, but several just didn‘t meet the mark.
Obviously, they‘re of their time and there are casual ethnic slurs and sexism afoot, but if you can get over those (why in the world would a “chop suey shop” feel dangerous???) and you love bibliomysteries, it might be worth a read.
Definitely #borrowNotBuy as far as I‘m concerned. 📚 🔍

Pickpick

A light pick, the best part of the book was the depiction of police procedures of the 50s and the truthful depiction of the surprisingly less than genteel and scholarly antiquarian book trade and the eccentric characters who practiced it. The mystery itself was simply the hanger on which to hang observations of the chicanery surrounding the trade.
