Bulfinch's Mythology | Bulfinch, Thomas

Pickpick

I‘ve always loved mythology and can‘t believe I didn‘t read this one earlier. It‘s a great starter book for someone just curious about myths. I enjoyed returning to all the old favorites from Greek and Norse mythology & while also hearing some from other cultures that were new to me. I liked how he mentions specific poems and other famous pieces that use mythology as a reference point. I don‘t think I‘ll ever tire of reading about Greek mythology.

My penpals know my struggle with this audiobook. It is likely the most boring book I‘ve ever finished. However, it was great at one important thing: putting me to sleep! The author would have benefited from a more skillful editor to reduce repetition. I felt like I was in an eternal circle of hell hearing the same anecdotes about Charlemagne for 30 hours. Read at your own peril! 👑

dabbe When I first quickly glanced at who read it from your pic, I just saw JAMES CAMERON. I then thought to myself, “Isn't that the TERMINATOR/TITANIC director? Wow! He was boring!“ Then I saw the name STEWART. #doh You also deserve the #perseverenceaward 💚💙💚 8mo

I posted this 3 years ago , but @LeahBergen has me revisiting great spines .There are a kagillion editions of Bullfinch‘s Mythology, but when I found this old edition with a bold centurion (is there any other kind?) on the spine I had to buy it.

batsy Ooh, nice 😍 With a Robert Graves intro, too! 3y
LeahBergen Love this! A good centurion always brightens a book spine. 😆 3y
merelybookish The bookends are wonderful! 😻 3y
Leftcoastzen @merelybookish they are actually clay & hollow, their eyes glow if you put tea candles in them , I use fakes because I don‘t want them smoky inside . 3y

My first finish for #20in4.

Another great addition to the Cotton Malone series. This was has Cotton determined to find out what happened to his father. It was a tough ride for Cotton physically and emotionally.

I have to say that I thoroughly missed Cassiopeia and Henrik though.

JamieArc I got a Kindle when they first came out and I happened to be studying abroad in France and this was the free book that came with it (why the 4th and not the 1st in the series I don‘t know). I remember not having high expectations for it, but really liked it. I should read the others. 3y
Mollyanna @JamieArc That is weird that they gave the fourth book as the freebie. I love the Cotton Malone series they are fast exciting reads. Cotton goes all around the world, so I feel like I‘m traveling with him. I definitely recommend the series. 3y

I hate how it goes back and forth between a travel narrative and a history book, but I do recommend it for anyone just getting into medieval history.

I want to learn more about the anti-Semitism of Richard I‘s reign. From what The Age of Chivalry describes it reminds me of the attacks on Jewish Americans in the last few years. Although denounced by those in power, nothing is really done to stop the hate.

I didn‘t realize in Gothic tradition, cathedrals form a cross. I‘ll have to look for this in Gothic cathedrals including Notre Dame.
