@TheSpineView

For me, the saddest passage in this epic poem.

TheSpineView That is sad. 😥 4d
dabbe @TheSpineView It'd get me every time I taught it. 😭 4d
kspenmoll Totally. So poignant. 3d
dabbe @kspenmoll Argo is probably the only character I totally cared about, too! 😂 3d

Cuilin I used to think that the hashtags were just fun and quirky and now I‘m so glad for the recapping because I forget what I read two hours ago. I could blame a book without a plot but I actually think it‘s me. lol 4d

BarkingMadRead @cuilin #ifeelthisinmysoul I had to go back and confirm patty‘s name, I thought it was Peg 🤣🙈 4d
AllDebooks @Cuilin no, it's me too. Lol 😅 4d
dabbe @Cuilin Nope, it's the lack of plot. I do the exact same thing. I've been skimming a lot, too. A while back one of the chapters was called “Farming“, and I just skimmed and thought “Oh, with a moo moo there, and an oink oink there ... Old McDonald had a farm ... chapter over. 🙄 4d
Bookwormjillk It‘s me too! I know I read this but all I remember is the pig 😂 4d
willaful The book did it just to prove me wrong! 😂 4d
mcctrish @dabbe I‘m laughing at that Old MacDonald reference out loud 4d
mcctrish With no intent to sound sacrilegious, this book reminds me of the Bible 🤣🤣 this second book is just a different apostle‘s take on the Lark Rise to Boredom 4d
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish #epic 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 4d

Bklover @dabbe 😂😂😂 Between you and @BarkingMadRead ‘s hashtags I am still finding myself completely entertained! 😂😘 3d
eeclayton I really admire your patience, I haven't been able to pick up the book since I finished chapter 7. I guess it's officially a DNF now. 3d
dabbe @Bklover Nobody does 'em better than @BarkingMadRead! She keeps all of us sane and laughing! 🤩😂😘 3d

I've found the recent, ever-evolving Twitter Discourse on The Odyssey equally maddening, absurd, and fascinating (y'know, in the train wreck way). Has anyone else seen this come through your feeds? Anyway, in this house, YES, The Odyssey is a foundational text that everyone should know about and also, we stan both Fagles and Wilson, end of. Let's have it all! More interpretation! More poetry! More lenses through which to view all of our stories!

Tamra We recently got the Wilson translation. I hope to get to it next year! 3w
RowReads1 It sounds like the conversation would drive me up a wall. I quit that site. 3w
Andrea313 @Tamra Please post about it when you get to it! I would love to know what you think. 3w
Andrea313 @RowReads1 I've been on the verge of quitting for ages and am pretty much one degree from entirely inactive. But sometimes I get drawn back in, and these past few days have been one of those times. 🙃 3w
ravenlee I have a whole Odyssey collection! I loved the Wilson, and started with the Fitzgerald (which is great but has weird translation quirks). I have several Iliads too, but haven‘t read many of them. It‘s a reading goal for someday, to get through all of both of them. 3w

#SundayFunday @bookmarktavern

definitely with something in mind, I can't browse, it's no good for me, 😂 😂 if I did, I'd come out with the whole store .

Mind you, that doesn't work either, I have 3 translations of The Aeneid, and let's not even get to how many versions of Frankenstein or Romo and Juliet I have - ummm, 7 for the first and 5 for the second, so yeah, no browsing for me 😂

BookmarkTavern I sympathize completely! I have 9 copies of Dracula. 🧛🏻 Thanks for sharing! 1mo

This is one of the many which I have, along with the Iliad: A New Translation by Peter Green. Before I had discovered these books, I did not know that they were around to make these old works an easier read. At first, they were tough but the extras that these books come with, really helped, it's been amazing, I'm reading books that I always thought would be out of my reach, I am truly grateful to these books.

BookmarkTavern Wonderful pick! Thank you for sharing! 2mo

Medieval Georgian epic poem with much adventure, fighting, passion and intense male friendship (see miniature above). All set further east than what I am used to: Arabia, India, Persia, Central Asia and Cathay (China). An international classic!

Dilara Also, Georgia is voting today and things are a bit tense. Fingers crossed that things don't escalate...
ETA: To clarify, I mean the country of Georgia in the Caucasus region, formerly part of the USSR.

nanuska_153 From my experiences in Georgia they tend to be so intense that you don't know when "homo" and when "no homo" ? 3mo
Dilara @nanuska_153 😂All feelings are turned up to 11 in this book but I'd just assumed it was because of the form - epic poetry - not the local culture... (edited) 3mo

Odyssey | Homer

Mehso-so

There was definitely some skimming in this reread. I still got out of it what I wanted: to reacquaint myself with the plot beats and characters so I'm better prepared for any recent retellings that catch my eye; to remind myself that the further from modern sensibilities, the less likely I am to enjoy a literary classic. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? A pity I can't read it in its original Greek with its famed rhythm, as much as I can credit Emily Wilson, the translator of my edition, for presenting the narrative in natural language-feeling English while also fitting the verse into iambic pentameter, this does mean the sentence structure is truncated, it's a little stilted to read/read aloud. 3mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 It doesn't help that based on a lot of different reading about Ancient Greece/Greek myths in university, I remember summarized events chronologically, which is not the way they're recounted in the Odyssey, a little frustrating to wade through! Just my natural impatience coming to bite me. 💁🏼‍♂️ 3mo

I...I really want to know what the original phrasing was in Homer's Greek. 😏
