Odyssey
Odyssey | Homer
By its evocation of a real or imaged heroic age, its contrasts of character and its variety of adventure, above all by its sheer narrative power, the Odyssey has won and preserved its place among the greatest tales in the world. It tells of Odysseus' adventurous wanderings as he returns from the long war at Troy to his home in the Greek island of Ithaca, where his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus have been waiting for him for twenty years. He meets a one-eyed giant, Polyphemus the Cyclops; he visits the underworld; he faces the terrible monsters Scylla and Charybdis; he extricates himself from the charms of Circe and Calypso. After these and numerous other legendary encounters he finally reaches home, where, disguised as a beggar, he begins to plan revenge on the suitors who have for years been besieging Penelope and feasting on his own meat and wine with insolent impunity.

When I bought this audiobook I was expecting a story translated into old fashioned and heavy English, dense with complicated imagery and challenging to the ear. How wrong I was! This translation by Emily Wilson is a joy to listen to and sounds so modern considering the age of the original poem. I‘m not especially a Greek mythology lover but I really enjoyed the adventure and scale of this story. A very pleasant surprise! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The archetypal travel adventure. Important as a source for so many references and allusions. As a story, definitely fun and a true sense of epic scale if you can get past the archaic style (which I find pleasing).

Emily Wilson's translation of Homer's Odyssey is awesome. Odysseus is such an arrogant jerk. He caused so many of his own problems yet Homer seems to love him all the more for it. My daughter said at one point, "This is a really Odysseus-centered book, isn't it?"

My children and I laughed at so many parts of this book, but naked Odysseus jumping on the threshold to announce his killing spree really cracked us up. Playtime is over, indeed.

Loved this translation!

Much has been said about her choice of the word “complicated” at the opening of the book. IMO it is absolutely the perfect word. The history of the word relates to strands being twisted or folded together (like the words “ply” and “plait”), which goes so well with all the symbolism related to weaving in the book.

Book #26: What is generally considered to be the sequel to The Iliad, the story of the end of the Trojan War continues after a short break in time. Written by the ancient Greek poet Homer, this story takes place at the end of the Trojan War as one of the war heroes, Odysseus, is trying to make his way home. However, after angering the god Poseidon...

The opening lines of #SuperMassiveBlackHole called to mind Odysseus & Calypso. After the Trojan War it took Odysseus ten years to return to Ithaca, seven of which he spent with Calypso on Ogygia. It was only following Athena's plea to Zeus that Calypso agreed to provide Odysseus with the materials he'd need to leave. For me their story is one of the more memorable in The Odyssey.

bernadette @Bklover yay! I'm so flattered. It's a good read with much more life than the prose translation I read in high school. A lot more going on in it too since all the stuff going on with Penelope and Telemachus was cut from the high school version I read. 9mo

Happily reading the early pages of Emily Wilson‘s new translation of the Odyssey - it‘s really fresh language: Odysseus is ‘a complicated man‘, we are going to be told ‘the old story for our modern times‘. It weaves its spell as we read, with a story within a story.
