The Best American Food Writing 2022 | Silvia Killingsworth, Sohla El-Waylly
post image
Pickpick

I requested this book bc I was curious and ended up reading some super interesting essays and realizing that food writing is such a broad topic! I also Loved that a lot of these essays highlighted immigrants and their relationship to food. There was scandal, history, love, disgust, discovery, and so much more. I definitely want to read more of these!! Is the 2023 one out? It probably is right?!

Ps. The stories mention COVID quarantine times

Holy ####, this was so good! It probably had something to do with the six cups of whole milk?

I‘ve never seen the pasta shape called for in the grocery store so I used another recommended shape and there wasn‘t enough. Next time, I‘d do 1.5x the amount of pasta and freeze half for another dinner. This also reheated way better than any other Mac and cheese I‘ve ever made.

Eighth recipe for #MtCookbook

Tamra Oh my, I would love it - harissa! 😋 3w
janeycanuck @Tamra I am not one for spice but OMG, so good! I don‘t think I‘ve dropped the recipe in that shared doc but I will later today. You could easily adjust the spice level up, if you wanted a bit more. 3w
Tamra @janeycanuck I feel so bad, neither have I! 3w
mabell Harissa is so good! We just whipped feta and harissa, and it was fabulous. We will definitely have to make this pasta! 3w
janeycanuck @mabell I still haven‘t gotten the recipe in but definitely in the next day or two! Definitely try this one! 2w

I‘m not a brittle fan and I don‘t handle spice well but this is right up my husband‘s alley so I made it for him to take on his ski weekend with his buddies. It didn‘t have a lot of kick to it but the spice is sprinkled on top so easy to adjust for taste!

First recipe down for #MtCookbook! Some rejigging of the meal plan meant we needed another side dish so I made the Rainbow Roasted Carrots (with pomegranate molasses) from Flavors Of The Sun and they were SO GOOD. Definitely going into our regular rotation!!

Tamra Ooooooo pomegranate molasses?! I‘ve always wanted to try it, but not sure where to get it. (I‘d probably have to order it.) 3mo
GinaKButler Looks so yummy! 3mo
mabell How pretty! 3mo

janeycanuck @Tamra I got our current bottle from a spice shop but I‘ve also seen it at a middle eastern grocery store we have in our city. It might also be called pomegranate syrup. 3mo
janeycanuck @GinaKButler @mabell And quite easy to make, too! Love those kinds of recipes!! 3mo
intothehallofbooks I‘ve never heard of pomegranate molasses but it sounds fantastic and I want some! 3mo
janeycanuck @intothehallofbooks Get some! It‘s great. A bit tart but also sweet. A lot of recipes in this cookbook use it, it‘s a great book! 3mo

There‘s a section on double layer cakes where you can mix and match batters, fillings, and icings and create your own cake from the different selections. The single layer cakes were also interesting. Tons of decorating tips, gorgeous photos and not your typical flavor combinations. But parts seem inaccessible…how much time does the average person have to make one of these? Great for passionate bakers, maybe not so much for casual bakers. #cookbook

One of the best nonfiction books I‘ve read. Dunlop takes the reader on a journey through Chinese cuisine, some familiar, others completely new. I love how she champions Chinese food, tries to debunk the misconception that Chinese food is greasy (there are so many types of steamed foods and lovely refreshing soups for eg). It‘s all you ever wanted to know and more, yet also engaging and easy to read. It will leave you hungry.

kspenmoll Thanks for your review! Got this for my husband for Christmas.🥢 4mo
