batsy Lovely picture! I'm finding this hard to put down, as well. I just finished the chapter right before Christmas Eve and one suspects Things are about to happen 😆 3y

LeahBergen I read over half of it yesterday! It‘s hard to put down once you get sunk into it, isn‘t it? 3y
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I think so ... she has a great way of describing people , she really gets her own characters 👌🏻 3y
erzascarletbookgasm I tried to slow down...couldn‘t help but finished it. Agree, what a turn of events. I am itching to discuss it with everyone. 3y

I have finally made it to the skiing, y'all! Lean avay! 🤣 These characters are really something, to say the least. Super enjoying the book though, and not sure I'd have gotten to it without the #FurrowedMiddlebrowGang, so hooray! @Ruthiella @CarolynM @rubyslippersreads @erzascarletbookgasm @Cathythoughts @LeahBergen

Mehso-so

What a soap opera this book is! The social mores were fascinating (and such a contrast with those of 1930's Britain the #FurrowedMiddlebrowGang have been enjoying) but I can't say I particularly liked or felt sympathy for any of the characters (except the babies). I suppose the women's backgrounds made it difficult for them to be anything but what they were. The men were just detestable. Looking forward to discussing.

Cinfhen Yay!!! I was patiently awaiting your review. Wonderful & insightful, as always. 3y
BarbaraBB I expected a so-so from you too! 3y

batsy Nice review! I'm only at Chapter 4, but I was hoping a non-detestable man shows up at some point. I'm guessing not 😩 3y
Simona @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I was curious, because of all the reviews and I placed a hold ... My library copy is available - after a few days of searching, they found it in storage place ... can you please tag me in your posts? 3y
Cinfhen Yay 🧡🧡🧡of course @Simona tagging @BarbaraBB to add you to the list 😀 3y
BarbaraBB Will do! @Simona @Cinfhen (edited) 3y
Cathythoughts Great review! I was just thinking the same ... it‘s so different to the Furrowed Middle Brow experience. I finished this one too , The Group .. must post up a review, it was a pick for me , I was fascinated by it all. 3y
CarolynM @Cinfhen Thank you. ? I think I should have said "melodrama" rather than "soap opera"? There's LOTS to discuss! 3y
CarolynM @BarbaraBB I guess I could have gone for pick...😬 It was a bit heavy-handed, don't you think? 3y
CarolynM @batsy Thank you😘 Some are worse than others😬 (edited) 3y
CarolynM @Cathythoughts The Ursula Orange books all addressed extramarital sex in one way or another, but the tone was so very different. Also the interaction between the sexes felt quite different. Do you think the English men were nicer or the English women were more compliant? @LeahBergen want to add your 2 cents? 3y
CarolynM @Cathythoughts Also, thank you😘 3y
LeahBergen @CarolynM @Cathythoughts The Furrowed Middlebrow books have SUCH a different tone, don‘t they? I don‘t know... I can‘t see British men being any nicer, can you? Perhaps it has something to do with the influx of youth who chose New York City as their destination of choice at that time. They seemed so much more opinionated, ultra-cerebral and out for themselves at all costs. A lot more than the pre and post war youth of England. But who knows 😆 (edited) 3y
CarolynM @LeahBergen I like your point about the attitude of the youth who gravitated to NY then. There were real opportunities for them to "get on" so ambition was often rewarded quickly leading to arrogance in the successful & resentment in the less successful. On the other hand I feel like Britain's middle class youth expected to have to wait their turn for success. Also, the FMB people while very comfortable, thank you, we're not rich like The Group. (edited) 3y
LeahBergen Yes, you are so correct there! I hadn‘t thought of that. The Group had a few members who were ultra rich at that time (and not even affected by the Depression). 3y
Cathythoughts @Leahbergen Such different worlds, Carolyn. Yes , cerebral is the word that comes to me too Leah, for The Group. Furrowed Middle brow is so different... grounded in nature and community. I‘m not so sure the men were any nicer .. but I think the women had a more solid sense of themselves . There was goodness & kindness in Middlebrow , Button , What a lovely woman. Extramarital sex is a minefield... so I‘ll think on about that before I comment 🤔 (edited) 3y
