They Knew Mr. Knight | Dorothy Whipple

Pickpick

Dorothy Whipple is always an enjoyable read and this one was no exception. As the afterword states, it‘s a “comforting middle-class drama” but I also found it quite suspenseful due to the titular villain, Mr. Knight. It had the feel of a 1930s Rosamunde Pilcher, if that makes sense? 😆

What did you think, #PersephoneClub ?

#PersephoneBooks

CarolynM I‘m finding it a bit hard to get into. Probably more about me than the book. 1w
Cathythoughts I did really love it, and got totally caught up in the story. This would be a reread for me. But I confess to watching the film and then slacking off on the reread … I‘m dipping in and out ❤️ and Yes , definitely suspenseful due to Mr Knight ! (edited) 1w
andrew61 I enjoyed it as well, leah. The characters are all well drawn including the villainous mr knight. You can't go wrong with dorothy. 1w
See All 18 Comments
daena I‘m moving slow, because life. But enjoying it nonetheless. Very intrigued by Mr.Knight, and even more so now by his villany! 1w
Tamra I‘m still in the middle and enjoying it. She fleshes out her characters well and there is a bit of a snarky undertone I appreciate. It isn‘t an entirely a cozy domestic novel. 1w
rubyslippersreads I‘m behind, as usual. 😏 1w
LeahBergen @CarolynM I hope it improves for you but if not, oh well! We should enjoy our reading. 😘 1w
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts I‘m looking forward to setting some time aside to check out the film! 1w
LeahBergen @andrew61 Yes! Her characters really are so well-drawn. 1w
LeahBergen @daena My life‘s been a bit intrusive into my reading time lately, too. 😆 1w
LeahBergen @Tamra It‘s a tad cozy in setting but I felt dread from the beginning. 😆 1w
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads 😆 Oh, well! 1w
quietjenn I'm with @rubyslippersreads and @daena and have quit a bit left to go! 1w
LeahBergen @quietjenn It‘s a bit of a Persephone chunkster! 7d
Aimeesue Still working my way through this one. I do love Whipple, but I‘m stuck in the cloister with the reluctant nun! Both are gripping me at different times! 6d
LeahBergen @Aimeesue Haha! You‘ll have to share your reading time between the two, I guess. 😆 5d
jlhammar I‘m not very far in, but enjoying it so far. Eager to get back to it. My April reading has not been going to plan! Will hopefully still finish by the end of the month. 4d

Cathythoughts Yes fleeting beauty ❤️ I‘m enjoying my laughter lines 😂 it‘s the only way to go. X 1w
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts I‘m enjoying mine as well! 😆 1w
andrew61 Great quote leah, it goes so well with the opening image of her in bed admiring her hands. I also like how celia's awareness of her aging is at the same time as freda is just becoming aware of herself. 1w
LeahBergen @andrew61 That‘s so true, Andrew. And there‘s also a touch of sadness in how much Celia is willing to sacrifice to ensure that Freda enjoys her youth, isn‘t there? 1w
andrew61 @LeahBergen, yes, freda is a bit of a madam. But I loved Ruth and Douglas. 1w
Tamra @LeahBergen @andrew61 aligns with Celia‘s rumination how the youthful pursuit of self is subsumed by real life once children enter the picture. 6d
LeahBergen @Tamra It does, doesn‘t it? 5d

It‘s now April so that means it‘s time for one of our #PersephoneClub reads!

It‘s my pick this month 👏 and we‘ll be reading They Knew Mr Knight by Dorothy Whipple. This is a casual buddy read; read and comment on each other‘s posts and reviews as you see them. We usually aim to finish by the middle of the month but that‘s not written in stone. 😉 And anyone is welcome to read along with us, of course!

Twelve-year-old Elizabeth is sent to spend the summer with her distracted, scholarly aunt at a Scottish manor house and finds herself mysteriously able to interact with the 18th-century family who once lived there.

“Time-slip” stories were a huge childhood favourite of mine and this 1975 novel is such a good addition to the genre.

Anna and Her Daughters | D.E. Stevenson
post image
Pickpick

Anna and her three daughters are left with very little money after the death of their husband and father. They must pull up stakes and leave their posh London life for a small cottage in Scotland (as one does). It starts off with this very Sense and Sensibility type plot but moves on into the familiar world we come to expect from DE Stevenson.

I thoroughly enjoyed it but liked the first half a wee bit more than the last.

#FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

LeahBergen @BarbaraBB No, these are vintage editions of an author reprinted by Furrowed Middlebrow Press (I can‘t remember if you‘ve read any of these with us? 🤔). She writes light, mid-20th century romantic fiction, primarily set in Scotland. Very cozy type reads! 2mo

jlhammar Okay, my guess upon finishing...Anna is in the forefront with the pink coat (looks too mature to me to be Helen and Helen and Rosalie are said to resemble her, right?) and Jane in the yellow coat. Helen & Rosalie in the background near the cottage. What do you think? 1mo
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Aren‘t they? 😘 1mo
LeahBergen @jlhammar That was my guess, too! 👍 1mo
CarolynM I didn‘t think of S&S, but you are right! For me, though, this one was a bit more fun. Looks like your dust jacket is in a bit better condition than mine😆 1mo

I had always avoided this Persephone novel as the subject matter (a missing child) seemed so disturbing. Well, it WAS disturbing but also utterly compelling and extremely well-written. It‘s best to go in without reading any blurbs or reviews as it does have some great twists.

Caryl I think my favorite parts were: Those first two pages, the description near the end of Susan remembering and missing Alex that was so sensory-intense (pages 332-333), and the ending. I thought it was genius to write the ending from the perspective of Detective Menetti. 2mo
CarolynM I wouldn‘t have chosen to read this one, but I‘m glad I did. I‘m also going to track down more of her work. I really liked that she took us far enough into the darkness to have an impact without descending completely into depravity. 2mo
LeahBergen @Caryl Oh, that‘s so true! That ending from his point of view WAS genius. 2mo
LeahBergen @CarolynM You are so right! My worry abound this one (going in) is that it would be TOO gruelling (ie; as to the mother‘s pain, etc) and it totally wasn‘t. It was such a … what‘s the word… approachable?… look into a profound and horrifying experience. 2mo

The Novels of Georgette Heyer | Jennifer Kloester
post image
Pickpick

This fantastic reference work is comprised of short essays on every Heyer novel in publication order, all 56 of them. Each chapter is interspersed with snippets from Heyer‘s letters, family photos and images of book covers. We read which novels Heyer thought were her best, which ones she tried to suppress, and oodles of other fascinating tidbits. I‘m obsessed. 😆

I highly recommend it to my fellow GH fans here on Litsy!

Gissy 👌❤️ 3mo
MrsMalaprop I was chatting to a work colleagues on my first day back after summer break & she told me she discovered a new author & went down a rabbit hole, reading the author‘s many books, listening to podcasts about her etc. So I quickly stacked one of her books on Litsy to look into her later. And the author was Georgette Heyer! I will have to let my colleague know about this book, and of course to get into reading one of her books myself 😊. 3mo
kspenmoll It sounds fascinating. 3mo

LeahBergen @Tamra It‘s the type of book that I know I‘ll pick up whenever I read one of her books. 👍 3mo
LeahBergen @Suet624 Try one of her regency ones. She‘s light and funny but a good writer (sort of a “Jane Austen Lite”). 😊 3mo

Still Missing | Beth Richardson Gutcheon
post image

It‘s now February so that means it‘s time for one of our #PersephoneClub reads!

@jlhammar ‘s pick for us this month is Still Missing by Beth Gutcheon. This is a casual buddy read; read and comment on each other‘s posts and reviews as you see them. We usually aim to finish by the middle of the month but that‘s not written in stone. 😉 And anyone is welcome to read along with us, of course!

Tamra Pulling it off the shelf now! 👏🏾 Thanks for the reminder because I can‘t believe it‘s February! (edited) 3mo

batsy @Centique I, too, am worried that this might take me years and by then Swanson will put out another similar concept thriller and then I'm behind for decades 😂 Like you and @LeahBergen I want to read more mysteries as well, especially now that I'm reading some heavy fiction! 3mo

Murder While You Work | Susan Scarlett
post image
Pickpick

Crikey, #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub ! This was a bit of a departure from our usual Scarletts, wasn‘t it? 😆 We get the “meet cute” of a charming couple that we come to expect from her novels but then she throws in a completely terrifying antagonist with an equally gruesome child. It was propulsively readable and I loved it.

CarolynM Nice review! It was quite different, but at least the good people winning and the bad losing was still there🙂 4mo
erzascarletbookgasm Cool! Can‘t wait to read this. 4mo

Tamra 💙 Terrific! I was just describing the same to my husband; this wasn‘t a typical light entertainment from FurrowedMiddleBrow. I enjoyed the mystery departure - didn‘t want to put it down! 🥹😬 4mo
jlhammar “Chicken soup, chicken soup.” Desmond is a tad creepy. Just read that chicken carcass part last night 😬 Really enjoying it so far! 4mo
batsy Great review! I've just started and liking the tone of it so far (felt so invested in a lipstick 😆). Happy to see that it's a resounding pick for everyone so far. 4mo
elkeOriginal Perfect review - ‘terrifying‘, ‘gruesome,‘ CRIKEY! Love your book stack too - excellent set😉 4mo
Ruthiella I also enjoy this departure from the imprint‘s usual fare. It‘s a nice preparation for our upcoming May inaugural mystery read. 😃 4mo
quietjenn What a way with words you have here 😅. And you are utterly correct with them! 4mo
rubyslippersreads I just started this, but am loving it so far (except for Desmond). Mrs. Roal gives off some real Miss Gulch vibes, threatening to have Mr. Jones destroyed. 😠 4mo

Pickpick

Harriet, an affluent woman with an unspecified learning disability, falls prey to a fortune hunter and his nasty family in this 1934 novel based on a famous Victorian criminal case.

It‘s an absolute cracker of a read and (despite the grim storyline) I couldn‘t put it down!

#PersephoneClub

sarahbarnes Absolute cracker 😆 5mo
Tamra I can tell already there are some not-so likable characters! 5mo
jlhammar I didn‘t want to put it down either! Such a dark and distressing story, but so well told. 5mo
See All 12 Comments
LeahBergen @sarahbarnes It was. 😆 5mo
LeahBergen @Tamra They come into play very early on. 😬 5mo
LeahBergen @jlhammar Exactly! I was really impressed with the writing. 5mo
andrew61 Looking forward to reading it next week leah particularly after thus review. 5mo
LeahBergen @andrew61 I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, Andrew! 5mo
CarolynM Great review. I‘m hoping to get started on it soon. 5mo
elkeOriginal I did not want nor plan to read this based on the sad, dark plot but you and @jlhammar ‘s reviews are making me rethink that decision! 5mo
LeahBergen @CarolynM Thanks! I think you‘ll like it. 5mo
LeahBergen @elkeOriginal I was a bit hesitant myself but most of the story focuses on how the four people slowly came to treat Harriet the way they did (without dwelling on the horrible aspects of that treatment). If that makes sense? It‘s very well done and reads much like a Victorian novel. (edited) 5mo

andrew61 This is difficult because little boy lost is in the voting list and I've already read that . So I'll go whipple. 5mo

It‘s now December so that means it‘s time for one of our #PersephoneClub reads!

@Gissy ‘s pick for us this month is Harriet by Elizabeth Jenkins. This is a casual buddy read; read and comment on each other‘s posts and reviews as you see them. We usually aim to finish by the middle of the month but that‘s not written in stone. 😉 And anyone is welcome to read along with us, of course!

LeahBergen And we can start to vote on next year‘s books, if everyone is still interested? February is @jlhammar , April is @LeahBergen , June is @quietjenn , August is @rubyslippersreads , October is @Aimeesue , and December is @andrew61 . 5mo
quietjenn I'm game for more #PersephoneClubbing! I'll start to ponder options, but won't post until a) we are sure things will continue and b) our first two months have been posted. 5mo
rubyslippersreads I‘m definitely interested in an excuse to add to my Persephone collection. 😉 5mo

CarolynM I‘m looking forward to reconnecting with the #PersephoneClub for this one - and to seeing next year‘s selections😀 5mo
Tamra I have this one Kindle. Sad about that, but looking forward to the read. 😁 5mo
elkeOriginal Looking forward to next year‘s reads! Unlike @rubyslippersreads I actually hope we read some I already own! I feel so guilty every time I walk past them and they remain in the TBR… 5mo
LeahBergen @quietjenn Perfect 👍 5mo
LeahBergen @jlhammar Yay! 👏 5mo
LeahBergen @CarolynM Me, too! 5mo
LeahBergen @elkeOriginal I have a LOT unread, too. 😆 5mo
rubyslippersreads @elkeOriginal I‘m just letting @LeahBergen do her job as enabler. 🤣 5mo
LeahBergen Okay, @andrew61 , you can go ahead and post your two choices for us for December! And don‘t forget to vote on the other months we‘re voting on now. 😊 5mo
