My two picks for November 2026:

One is a story of 17-year-old non-identical twins. “ … fascinating details about the workings of a dress shop, make for a funny, sweet, and irresistible concoction.”

The other features Isabel and her house full of refugees. “Margery Sharp provides us a thoughtful, funny, and terrifically entertaining slice of British life in the immediate aftermath of war.”

#FurrowedMiddleBrowClub

kwmg40 Both of these look good, but since it seems like Sharp will win the Scarlett/Sharp match-up for January, I'm going to go with 5h
catebutler Love these choices! I choose 5h

rubyslippersreads Because of the shoes, I‘m choosing (edited) 5h
willaful I, unsurprisingly, also love these choices! 😍 In fact, I almost chose Peter and Paul for my nominations. I am quite fond of The Foolish Gentlewoman but would rather try 5h
Tamra A manipulative & malevolent relation joins the happy household? 😜 Sign me up for 4h
quietjenn Good match up! I think I'll go with 3h
Ruthiella I feel like it‘s not the #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub without a Susan Scarlet in the mix! I vote for 3h
LeahBergen This is a toughie! I‘ll go for 3h
Kimzey A house full of refugees, sounds interesting. I‘ll vote for 3h

The Woods in Winter | Stella Gibbons

I ended up enjoying this book, although not all the characters were likeable (and I certainly wouldn‘t want to live in Ivy‘s cottage!) This vintage dust jacket is not at all how I picture a woman who‘s had three husbands and could have a fourth if she chose. 🤣

I was also interested to see that one of my favorite authors, Elizabeth Goudge, was a fan of Stella Gibbons. Next I‘m going to try Cold Comfort Farm.

#FurrowedMiddleBrowClub

Tamra Agreed, that image doesn‘t fit what I have in my mind either! 13h
TheEllieMo This is the second time I‘ve seen this book mentioned today…. It must be a sign *adds to TBR pile* 13h

Cuilin @Tamra same @rubyslippersreads I may try Cold Comfort Farm too. And 13h
bookandbedandtea Amazing cover! 😂 Not what I had in mind either! 12h
Suet624 You‘re comment about this woman with the three husbands cracked me up 10h
Ruthiella I agree with you and @tamra and @cuilin and @bookandbedandtea that‘s not how I envisioned Ivy either! 😅I remember liking Cold Comfort Farm, though it has been a few years. (edited) 10h
Tamra @Ruthiella I did too, but it‘s been long enough that I don‘t remember details. 10h
LeahBergen Cold Comfort Farm is good! @Cuilin 9h
willaful Ivy clearly has plenty of sex appeal. This cover cracked me up. 9h
quietjenn I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but Cold Comfort Farm is one of my favorites. 7h

Mehso-so

I loved the charming scenes in Ivy‘s cottage, so cozy and sweet, despite the 🪳🪳🪳. The novel would have been better had it focused on Ivy as healer and hadn‘t spun out and around too many other threads that weren‘t very engaging.

I‘m not one for gushing sentimentality, but the final scene with Mike was 😭. #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

P.S. I‘m still in denial about the season. 🫣

Ruthiella I‘m with you. It lacked focus. I also agree with you on the cockroaches! 🪳😱 😂 1d
LeahBergen That final scene with Mike got me! 😢 1d

Tregulla is set in Cornwall about ill advised young love, with lots of colorful locals. Visiting moon is set against the impending war, a tale of family and some romance.

willaful I'm disappointed to break the pattern but still going for 2d
Kimzey I'd like to visit Cornwall, so my choice is 2d
quietjenn Cornwall is quite tempting, but I think I'll go with 2d

Nominations for July: the Clavering is described as "two middle-aged women writers, close friends and neighbours, offer one another advice and support while navigating life in a lively Border village" while the Orange is a "charming evocation of wartime life, snobbishness in many forms, and the difficulties of being a woman on her own."

LeahBergen @CarolynM Ursula Orange is SO good! (edited) 3d
willaful I find them both appealing, but one is sadly not in my library so I'm voting for 3d

Here are the options for the May 2026 #FurrowedMiddleBrowClub. They both sound fun and light with a hint of romance — perfect for the lovely month of May! Both books will be tagged in the comments. Brampton Wick is described as an 'irresistible comedy about domestic life'. The author has been compared to a mix of Angela Thirkell and Trollope.

Our #FurrowedMiddlebrow nominations for January are two of my favorites authors:

Sharp‘s first book is about a girl who feels like an outsider in her self-consciously artistic family, and strives for an ordinary life.

Ten Way Street is described as having “a little more Noel Streatfeild in it than the average Susan Scarlett,” which got my attention. 😁 It‘s about a governess caring for the difficult children of an actress.

Please vote below!

LeahBergen Ooo, I want to read both! Let‘s see… eeny meeny… I‘ll vote for Scarlett! 4d
CarolynM You‘ve made it very difficult, Willa! Sharp by a whisker 4d
kwmg40 Tough choice! I‘ll go with 4d

bookandbedandtea Since it's one of the ones I was thinking of nominating, I'll go with 4d
Cuilin Oh both sound so good. My vote is … 4d
catebutler I also vote for 4d
Ruthiella I‘ve read Rhododendron already - and it‘s good! Happy to re-read, but will vote for 4d
rubyslippersreads I‘ve read and loved Rhododendron Pie, so I‘ll vote for 3d
Kimzey My choice is ……. 3d
willaful @rubyslippersreads I have too, but I wanted to hear what other people have to say about it. 3d
quietjenn I'm another who has read the Sharp, so vote for 3d
willaful @LeahBergen ooops, sorry, didn't realize I messed up the hashtag. 2d
LeahBergen No problem! I had just clicked on the hashtag to review our choices and didn‘t see your month. 😆 2d

Here is our “master list” of what we‘ve read together as a group (to help out those of you who will be nominating our 2026 reads). Sorry for the small print; I threw it together quickly! 😆

#FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

catebutler @LeahBergen You are amazing!! Thank you! 5d
Tamra You are quick as a 🦊 5d
LeahBergen @catebutler No problem! It needed to be done. 😆 5d

CarolynM What a lot of great books we've read together! Such a pleasure to be part of this group 🥰 5d
Cuilin This is fantastic. 5d
Amiable That‘s impressive! 5d
LeahBergen @CarolynM @Cuilin @Amiable We‘ve had such a good time! 😄 5d
LeahBergen Okay, @willaful and @Tamra ! You two can post your two selections for January and March (respectively). Two voting posts should eliminate any overlap in nominations. 🤞 Don‘t forget to use our hashtag and tag everyone on this ⬆️ post. There was one more person added today. 😄 5d
Kimzey Great to see all the titles. Sorry I was late in responding earlier. Thanks for adding me back! Looking forward to seeing our new selections! 5d
bookandbedandtea I'm ready with a couple nominations 😊 5d
LeahBergen @Kimzey No problem at all! 😊 4d
LeahBergen @bookandbedandtea Great! You‘ll be nominating for our July read but I‘ll let you know when to post. We are waiting for our January and March people to post right now and then I‘ll ask for May and July (you! 😆) to put up your nomination. We‘ve found that posting two months at a time saves us from any duplication in nominations. 4d
Tamra @LeahBergen I will wait for @willaful to post January to avoid potential duplication. 😊 4d
LeahBergen @Tamra Sounds good! 👍 4d
bookandbedandtea @LeahBergen That makes so much sense! 😉 4d
willaful @Tamra should have it up tomorrow. 4d
Tamra @willaful 👍🏾 4d
rubyslippersreads Looking forward to a whole year of delightful reading! 3d
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads I am, too! 😄 3d
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads There‘s been a slight change and you‘re now up to select our November voting choices. Is that okay? If so, post away! 😄 9h
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen That‘s fine. I‘ll start researching my choices. 😊 6h
