The books of reed writing, each different in its own way, were sheer delight. In the Consultant Captain‘s the water was powerfully drawn, the reeds‘ lively growth recalled the shore at Naniwa, and the intermingling of the two showed great poise. There were also pages on which with fresh inventiveness he had tried a quite different style and done full justice to the letters, the placing of the rocks, and so on.

llwheeler That is so cool! 6y
saresmoore I enjoyed imagining the fragrances. There are certainly many cultural issues and the materialism is evident, but the ties to nature are strong and grounding for the characters and story, and probably were for the culture, too. I‘m really glad to be reading this! 6y

saresmoore Also, I do so appreciate your posts and insights! I don‘t think I‘d be enjoying it nearly as much if I were reading it solo. 6y
Lindy @saresmoore I feel the same about having support in a group read. I would have a hard time sticking to this reading commitment without have co-readers like you out there in Litsyland. 6y
Daisey @Lindy @saresmoore I'm a chapter behind again, but I completely agree! I would not be enjoying this nearly as much if I were stumbling through it on my own. The extra research and thoughts about the details add so much to the reading experience. Also, these posts, whether enjoyable or frustrating, almost always build my anticipation to read the chapter! 6y
Lindy @Daisey 😘 6y
batsy I really enjoyed this chapter for those reasons, too! And I agree with @saresmoore and @Daisey I appreciate your posts on the nuances you enjoy and what everyone else shares as they read along. I would definitely be procrastinating on my reading of this if we didn't have this buddy read ❤️ 6y

It‘s interesting that the hammers of workers beating cloth were so distasteful to #Genji when he was slumming it in #Genji4 but not the loud ring of iron mortars everywhere in his home, as people pound wood into incense in #Genji32. I guess the noise is okay if classy folk are making it.

batsy Great point. The elitism is staggering, even by the elitist standards of modern society 🙃 6y
