These are the most satisfying short stories I have ever read.

KathyWheeler I bought this book when I saw her a few years ago; I need to actually read it. 3mo
Nebklvr @KathyWheeler Her writing is tremendous. I have loved some of her novels but I usually don‘t like short stories so that was a nice surprise. 3mo

CLR James is literally one of the greatest to ever do it, and The Black Jacobins certainly earns its reputation as a classic. Impossible not to think of Gaza as you read.

2.75/4 ⭐️

I think this is a soft pick for me. I was expecting a different story. This wasn‘t a bad story, just sad. I enjoyed the magical realism elements. They weren‘t overpowering though. It was more like realism with a touch of magical.

?/5 ⭐

This Edwidge Danticat, who I usually love, didn‘t work for me. The story is told in a way that you hardly get to know the characters and, as opposed to her other books, it could have been set in a lot of countries, it wasn‘t as Haitian as, for example, Everything Inside.

I couldn‘t resist and bought the first Kim Stone book (looking at you @TrishB @MicheleinPhilly @squirrelbrain and some others!) Or actually the prequel to the series. We‘ll see! On audio and print I am reading The Spinoza Problem, which is fascinating. I also plan to read another Danticat, whose books I always love.

squirrelbrain Ooh I hope you enjoy! We‘ll get you hooked yet…. 😜 5mo
rockpools I‘ve only read Claire by Danticat - I do keep meaning to find more though. Which would you recommend? 5mo
TrishB Hope you enjoy 🤞🏻 5mo

I read this for work. It‘s the One Maryland One Book selection for 2024. It‘s a fictional account of the aftermath of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010. Told through multiple character‘s POV‘s it really works to create a whole picture of the aftermath & how it affects ordinary people. It‘s beautifully written! So many long paragraphs proved a challenge for my adhd brain but it‘s such a powerful read. You need to read this one!
