Moving to a new place is such a relatable story to so many people, but it‘s not often I encounter a story where someone moves to the other side of the world! Ruth‘s experience reminded me of making new friends and missing old ones, but I was lucky enough not to also have a language barrier and leaving a sibling behind. Ruth‘s family is right: you need courage, perseverance, and patience in life.

This one wasn‘t for me. I‘ll admit it was a gamble reading the sequel to a book I read eons ago, but I‘m still not sure I would have liked it. It picks up with Pei and Ji Shen moving to Hong Kong and trying to make their own way just in time to get caught up in its WWII occupation by Japan. Many things happen, but the competent, if unadorned, writing lacks much urgency or emotion. As a result, it was just too easy to put down.

Kitty is raised to become a shallow woman whose only goal in life is to find a husband who is a ‘good catch‘. She marries Walter, a bacteriologist, because she can‘t find a better eligible match and follows him to Hong Kong. Never in love with Walter she soon starts an affair with an older, married man. When Walter finds out he takes a position in a town struck with cholera and forces Kitty to come with him. Left alone and despised by her husband

Anna40 she volunteers in the convent‘s orphanage. There she experiences the nuns‘ selfless love for the children. Kitty‘s character development is interesting and so are some of the themes. It‘s also a compelling read. However, the racism, ableism and cliched language are off putting. (edited) 6mo

Sitting on the back deck of our new place with my « on deck » book pile for the weekend! I am quite pleased with this group, and am very curious about Solenoid. Happy weekend, all!

sarahbarnes I‘m also very curious about Solenoid! I‘m on the list for it at the library. 8mo
HardcoverHearts @sarahbarnes I may be misremembering but I thought I heard it called a surreal novel and I don‘t always get on with those types of books so we will see… enough people whose tastes I usually align with have said it‘s great so I‘m more optimistic than not. But it‘s a wild card, for sure! 8mo

I can't help it. He's such a good storyteller. I can't decide the author's view of women. At times, Mai Mai, Mary, Shavon, and Tess seem to be submissive, but they're also the ones who are behind the scenes, making things happen. Just like in Shogun. I was on the edge of my seat during the typhoon. Why isn't this a movie with Sam Heughn as Durk Streun, the Taipan?
