I struggle with this one.

I didn't connect with any of the characters, in fact I kept thinking that if it weren't for Kyle (who I hate, by the way) this whole story wouldn't exist.

The slow pace, character driven plot just didn't grab me like the Farseer Trilogy did.

However, I understand that Hobb develops her stories over time, and I can see a lot of potential in this trilogy and its importance in the overall Elderling series.

Enchanted_Bibliophile @PuddleJumper I know I'm way behind on the #RealmOfElderlings timetable, but I'm going to try my best to catch up before the end of the year. 5d
Ruthiella Kyle is despicable. But there is good character development in this trilogy, especially with Malta IMO. 5d

PuddleJumper Kyle is the absolute worst. He is a catalyst for the other characters and plot but yeah, it's hard sometimes when nearly everything goes back to one character. I've totally lost the plot with where we are! I think this book was for Sep/Oct and last one is Nov/Dec. I'm very behind as well 5d
Enchanted_Bibliophile @Ruthiella I can't wait to see that, she really got the spoiled little teenage brat going strong in this one. 5d
Enchanted_Bibliophile @PuddleJumper Glad to hear it's not just me 😊 5d

Never Fade | Alexandra Bracken

This is an awesome second book.
In YA, I often run into what I like to call middle book syndrome – where the second installment seems to lack enough content for a full story, but without that content, the final third book just wouldn't make sense.

Alexandra really nailed it with this one.
It is action packed, power driven, tense and dark featuring a high-stakes rebellion and political oppression.

👇🏼 Continue 👇🏼

Enchanted_Bibliophile I enjoyed the brisk pacing with just enough inner turmoil to keep me hooked.

I can't believe I never finished the series, especially with that cliffhanger ending.

Here‘s my #10beforetheend selection. I‘m always looking for something that encourages me to read what I already own.

A few will do double work for the #OffMyShelf challenge.

The Quincunx will meet #Allergictochunksters and #ChunksterChallenge2025 .

It‘s also a holdover along with The Illusionist from the #14Books14Weeks challenge. 🙊

ChaoticMissAdventures So many good titles! You can never go wrong with a Morrison. Good luck 🤞 2w
merelybookish That's a fun lineup! 2w

Ruthiella @merelybookish I agree! A good mix of genre, length, etc. 2w
vivastory Can't go wrong w/ Everett! One of my funniest signed book stories is a few yrs ago I was reading Carey's “Oscar & Lucinda“ which I happened to pick up at Half Price Books. Halfway through I looked at the front & noticed it was signed by Carey. A nice addition...but the cover is a movie tie-in edition...how embarrassing for Carey (although admittedly a fantastic movie!) 2w
Ruthiella I‘m on a quest to read all of Everett! 😅 I read Oscar & Lucinda but never saw the movie. But Cate Blanchett and Ralph Fiennes are both such very good actors. 2w
BkClubCare I have that PE on my shelf, too. 🤔 2w
Ruthiella @BkClubCare it‘s one of the few of his titles I own. I‘ve read a few from the library. 2w

It's taken me about a year to get through this. Though not as fast paced as the previous two it had a resonance and a reflective nature that I enjoyed after I had settled into the pace of it.
Highly recommend and a fitting end to this amazing trilogy.

I‘ve been forgetting to note when I finish a book that qualifies for #chunksterchallenge2025. Here are all the books I‘ve read this year that top 500 pages. 3 “bitsy” chunksters but one fully qualifying chunkster. The Shadow Rising is my #allergictochunksters pick that‘s been sitting waiting for me for more than a year. It was so good, though! Looking forward to starting book 5 …

Amiable Excellent work! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 “Challenger” was a great read, wasn‘t it ? 1mo
julieclair Congrats on all, but especially for finishing a book that‘s been waiting for a year! 🎉🎉 1mo

Oof! So glad this is over. A 600 page picaresque comic novel that I didn‘t find very funny most of the time. I understand how it will appeal to some readers but alas not I. Buttoned up Raleigh Hayes leaves his ordered life in small town NC to go on a crazy quest to New Orleans on behalf of his estranged father. Along the way he reconnects with what‘s important in life.

Amiable Props for persistence! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 1mo

To Shape a Dragon's Breath | Moniquill Blackgoose

I wish this kind of read was available when I was a teenager!

As a book about a girl and her dragon, this book was splendid fun. As a book about an indigenous island girl and her endangered species dragon, this is the kind of book I've been waiting for...as an indigenous reader, this fantasy is a treasure 📚🐉💖.

I prefer books without battles, but some may find this a bit slow paced.

👇🏼

AnnCrystal This was like a journey log from the MC's POV, with plenty of drama mixed into the storyline.

I was trying to keep away from books that capture some of the darkness that is now our crazy, chaotic reality.

If this book would have been available before these dark times, I wouldn't have been as disturbed by the unjust society that Anequs and her dragon Kasaqua must journey through.

AnnCrystal Reading this now, during these dark times that we're all experiencing, I found this to be an unsettling read.

Unsettling, yet beautiful.

This world was well developed and incredibly detailed. All the characters were crafted with care and respect.

I would have liked more time on the island and learning more about the traditions there. Perhaps in the second book.

The MC Anequs held the resilience and dignity from real life Native Nations.

AnnCrystal I've read books with lesbian or gay characters. This is the first with a bisexual character (Anequs). I liked how this gave a unique chance with two possible love interests for Anequs...although, I don't believe I cared for the polyamorous. At this point, I'm not sure who I like better for Anequs. I like both Liberty and Theod...but I'd prefer for Anequs to truly fall for one or the other, not both at the same time (that's just me).

AnnCrystal The magic system was just beginning to be truly explored at the end of the book, so I'm hoping the next book shows more.

I am also hoping that we readers get to travel to the unconquered lands, meet the tribal people there, and learn more about the indigenous methods of working with Dragons.

This storyline is incredible.

There are 511 pages divided into 87 unmarked chapters.

I finished this 1125 page bind-up of all three novels. What a journey! This is the life of a medieval Norwegian woman - from her happy childhood, to her tumultuous courtship and marriage, to her years of motherhood and wifedom, to finally retreat to a nunnery and her death. Undset makes the characters, time and place come alive and feel relevant to the modern reader.

wanderinglynn woot! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎉🙌🏻 2mo
