What They Don't Teach You in Jr. High | Susan Blake, Susan Wittig

Book four of the Fifteen series was given to me on my 13th birthday by one of my best friends. I reread it last month for #HorrifiedReads and honestly, it could've been much worse. In fact, some of the other 80s novels I read made this one look great by comparison! I don't think I ever read any of the other books in this series, and after looking at the list, I think maybe it's better that way 😂 NovemberbytheNumbers #15

Well, I don't really have a favourite from October; I had 6 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ reads and 3 ⭐️⭐️ reads. However, I did have fun reading 80s teen romance novels for #HorrifiedReads! Thanks for the trip down memory lane @RestlessFickleBookSlut! I only made it through 4 out of the 50+ stack, so I think I might keep on reading them. It's been quite the experience! #SpookyOctober #OctoberFavorites #UncannyOctober #BestofOctober

Sace Obviously I've been horrible at my own reading challenge. I was just thinking the other day that I'm going to keep reading them beyond October. 6y

October was a great reading month for me! It was fun to revisit Sweet Valley High and some other 80‘s YA for #horrifiedreads. I listened to several short audiobooks and climbed a little further on #MountTBR.

My favorites of the month were Dear Fahrenheit 451, which I think any book lover will laugh along to, and my #LitsyGoesPostal #OwlPost book (ssshhhhhhh!)

Happy Halloween Litsy!

This is really not a ghost story. Sorry #horrifiedreads readers. But, it is still 1990 YA, and here are some clues-
😱 I pretty much had that hair from the cover!
📞 When Jessica answered the cordless phone, she had to pull up the antenna!
😡 Steven thinks he‘s not lying to Cara by not telling her about the other girl he‘s seeing. Loser.

Rcoco And Tricia is the girl who died of leukemia!!! It's coming back to me.... 6y
LibrarianRyan 😁😁👍🏻 6y
Soubhiville @Rcoco good memory! Lucky for me, SVH is very good at brief recaps, so I was up to speed quickly. It‘s been a few since high school... 😜 6y

Well, I tried Sisters & Sweet Valley High 🙄 Next up for #HorrifiedReads: Seniors.

RebL What a rad layout! 7y
TK-421 @RebL Awesome! 😂 Thanks! 7y
Smrloomis Oh wow those covers! 😆 7y
Sace HANDS OFF HE'S MINE! 😂 Because delving into the issues of why this 16 year old is in foster care is to bothersome. 😑 Though that series does sound a little edgier (for lack of a better word.) 7y

Mehso-so

SVH 1 introduces the Wakefield twins: Elizabeth is sweet, smart, and down to earth while Jessica is a petty, manipulative bitch who only cares about herself. Various crises get tied up with neat little bows by the end, with the exception of one underlying thread left unresolved as a tie-in to the next book. Hate to say it because I used to love these, but this is closer to a Pan than a So-So. ⭐️⭐️ (rounded up for nostalgia factor) #HorrifiedReads

TK-421 Don't even get me started on the stereotypical characters: spoiled rich kids, the class clown, the hunky jock, the bad-boy dropout, the possessive boyfriend, the nice girl with a secret past, the good girl from the bad family... There were also lots of issues I see as an adult that never occurred to me as a teen. My initial thoughts were WAY more than 451 characters! Still, I plan to continue reminiscing and subject myself to more of these! 7y
JewelsEnd Hahaha.... My sister used to read these and I would mock her for choosing tabloid literature. But in hindsight, at least she was reading. Probably good to encourage that! 7y
Sace Great review! This really has been an interesting step back in time for me. The writing is so awful and the characters are incredibly bland and stereotyped (and by no means diverse.) Why did I read crap? And I know that there was better reading out there at the time! 7y

Skybariline I read so many of the books I this series back in the day! Don't think I could go back to them now. 7y
Zelma If you're into podcasts, check out The Literary Disco episode on this book. It's hilarious! 7y
TK-421 @Zelma I'll have to check it out! 7y
TK-421 @Skybariline It's weird; I remember devouring these in my early teens, but rereading them as an adult, I'm finding fault with just about everything in these books! It's certainly been eye-opening! 7y
TK-421 @RestlessFickleBookSlut I know! Obviously there were better books out there, but at the time, these teen romance novels were relatively cheap and readily available. I'm going to try Seniors next because I remember they had a more diverse cast of characters and I think the plots were somewhat more mature than SVH. 7y
TK-421 @JewelsEnd I agree that it's better to be reading than not, and that it should be encouraged. As cringeworthy as these books may be to me now, I do have fond memories of reading them. And I suppose they did contribute to my love of books, which is a good thing! 7y
Sace I think you nailed it with "readily available and cheap" ? At least that's the case for me when I was young. 7y

Pickpick

This was pretty controversial for its time, with discussion of premarital sex, how to make a boy stop if he gets too insistent- suggest going to get a hamburger!, abortion... pretty tame for now, but I‘m sure it raised a stir back in the day. It was a good first choice for #horrifiedreads

Sace I remember this one! I think I read my big sister's copy. 7y
Laura317 So THAT'S where the title came from. I had no idea. 7y
Soubhiville @Laura317 pretty ridiculous huh? Think it‘d work with veggie burgers? I‘m vegetarian 😜 7y
LibrarianRyan I'm not fully awake and thought your dog was a kangaroo. 7y
Soubhiville @LibrarianRyan 🤣 I‘m so glad she‘s not! It is a funny angle, I see that. 7y

I went to my favorite local used bookstore and several thrift shops to pick up 80s teen romances for @RestlessFickleBookSlut ‘s #HorrifiedReads challenge. I cannot overstate how excited I was to binge read cringeworthy literature. Unfortunately the universe would rather trick than treat me. I got nothing!

TK-421 Gorgeous store! Sorry you didn't find anything for a cringe binge! 7y

#horrifiedreads book haul. I figured I might as well go for the potentially scary SVH books to fit into the October spirit.

Sace I think I want to read the tagged book! 7y
Sace Oh yes! Available for free with my kindle unlimited subscription! Woot! 7y
Soubhiville @RestlessFickleBookSlut oh sweet! I just started a new release thriller, but as soon as I finish that I‘m going to read the tagged book. It came out after I moved on to adult books, so I haven‘t read it yet 😊 7y
