Well, this was one of the more unusual reading experiences I‘ve had! The main character‘s last name is Poitier, and his first name is Not Sidney. Much hilarity and clever dialogue ensues due to this unusual name. Not Sidney is Black, and is the victim of all kinds of racial prejudice - truly serious American societal issues - but somehow Percival Everett manages to write these scenes as humorous. Very skillful. ⬇️
julieclair But then there are the bizarre scenes - mostly dream sequences - which were either total nonsense or just way over my head - not sure which. Not to mention that Not Sidney‘s two closest friends are Ted Turner, who talks in stream of consciousness, and Percival Everett himself, who is portrayed as an aloof and eccentric university professor. But somehow, through all the cryptic dialogue, they manage to give Not Sidney good advice. ⬇️ 2d
julieclair I listened on audio, and the narrator did a fabulous job of capturing the accents and attitudes of the various characters. Since there wasn‘t much of a plot - rather a chronological series of events that happen in Not Sidney‘s life - it was easy to dip in and out of this one whenever I needed a laugh - or to think - or to be confused. 2d
