Well, this was one of the more unusual reading experiences I‘ve had! The main character‘s last name is Poitier, and his first name is Not Sidney. Much hilarity and clever dialogue ensues due to this unusual name. Not Sidney is Black, and is the victim of all kinds of racial prejudice - truly serious American societal issues - but somehow Percival Everett manages to write these scenes as humorous. Very skillful. ⬇️

julieclair But then there are the bizarre scenes - mostly dream sequences - which were either total nonsense or just way over my head - not sure which. Not to mention that Not Sidney‘s two closest friends are Ted Turner, who talks in stream of consciousness, and Percival Everett himself, who is portrayed as an aloof and eccentric university professor. But somehow, through all the cryptic dialogue, they manage to give Not Sidney good advice. ⬇️ 7d
julieclair I listened on audio, and the narrator did a fabulous job of capturing the accents and attitudes of the various characters. Since there wasn‘t much of a plot - rather a chronological series of events that happen in Not Sidney‘s life - it was easy to dip in and out of this one whenever I needed a laugh - or to think - or to be confused. 7d
BarbaraBB I really want to read this! Great review. 7d

This book manages to highlight the important issue of book banning, while also being hopeful and laugh-out-loud funny. Although several members of my book club complained that there were too many characters to keep track of (keeping a character list as you read is very helpful], we had a great discussion. We have even decided to read some banned books in future months.

Reggie There‘s a couple of people in my bookclub and they always make a character list. I‘m always impressed with them. 1w
BooksandCoffee4Me I‘m impressed! As a teacher, I taught kids to make character lists, but would it occur to me to make one myself? 😂 1w

I loved the strong sense of time and place in this novel - small town Maine in the late 1700s. The main character is a midwife - a strong woman with influence in her community, which she uses for good. Based on a real midwife, Martha Ballard, who kept a diary that has survived. Superb storytelling!

BooksandCoffee4Me This sounds so interesting. I love that her diary was found and her story kept. Adding. 1w

I enjoyed this story about famed interior designer‘s renovation of the iconic Greenbrier Hotel. A strong, confident, talented woman, Draper made some difficult decisions as she pursued her career at a time when it was not socially acceptable for upper class women to work. The hotel itself felt like one of the characters in the book, and it sounds like a beautiful place. I‘d love to visit in person!

At first I thought, cool a brother and sister duo hunting ghosts - a bit of a Supernatural vibe.
I truly tried to like this.
The main issue was I did not like Harper at all, she's whiny, self-scented and so needy.
The other thing is the story felt forced, and abnormal. Focusing on unnecessary details, while leaving important issues behind for no real reason other than to prolong the book.

At least it's off my shelf now. #donation

Great idea, but poorly executed. Christine's husband has recently died, so she & her son decide to celebrate Christmas in the cabin that her husband had rented before he died. When they get there, things go bad in so many ways.
Warnings for a brutal pet death & for an ambiguous ending. Numerous parts of this book don't add up 🤷🏼‍♀️

I truly enjoyed this one.

I realized that I really like stories like this, where a hiker must battle not only their own inner self but also the harsh surroundings of the trails and all that it entails.

Even though I figured out the mystery early on, the writing was so captivating that I just had to keep listening.
The audio was extremely well-done.

I've seen the movie many years ago, so I knew what was to come.
But even knowing the big twist, I still found this very enticing and entertaining. All the subtle foreshadowing throughout the book, the tiny details one would miss on a first read.
All done masterfully.

I'm kicking myself for how long this was on my TBR and I just got to reading it!
I was able to read this fairly uninterrupted at work and I was hooked within the first chapter and just enjoyed the brisk pacing, characters and world building that pulled me and was a great read as I turned page after page.

I just placed a hold for the next book at the library! 😁
