The Grave Tattoo | Val McDermid
post image

Difficult to choose my favourite book in #August for #12Booksof2023 as I read the next books in a lot of my favourite series that all got five stars, but going for The Grave Tattoo (a non-series read). This book has everything mystery, intrigue, compassion and a theory for what happened to Fletcher Christian of Mutiny on the Bounty fame. Loved both the past and modern time line and strongly recommend this, which I couldn‘t put down.

Andrew65 Think August was my best reading month of the year, and also notable mentions for An Evil Mind and Hunting Evil by Chris Carter, Lustrum by Robert Harris (book 2 in the Cicero trilogy), The Whisper of Sorrows and The Big Man Upstairs by JD Kirk, and The Wrexham Killings by Simon McCleave.

Also Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel.

All highly recommended.

In British maritime history of the late 18th century, few events captured the public's imagination more than the Mutiny on the Bounty. There have been at least two films made & these positioned Fletcher Christian as standing up against a cruel Captain (actually Lieutenant on this voyage). This book, based on records & testimonies from the court martials etc, argues that far from being cruel, (Continued)

OutsmartYourShelf William Bligh tried to avoid discipline by the usual method of flogging as much as possible which throws doubt on Christian's motives for the mutiny. Plus almost half the crew wanted to leave with the Lieutenant, something unlikely if he was as capricious as reported afterwards, mostly by people who had a grudge against Bligh it must be said.

Despite the best efforts of the author, the narrative unfortunately became a little dry in places.

OutsmartYourShelf My takeaway from this book is that although Bligh had his faults, I tend to think that perhaps his reputation has been unfairly traduced over the years. Overall - good account of the story but can become overly bogged down in the details & academically dry in places. 2.5⭐

Andrew65 An interesting period of history with conflicting views. It would be interesting to know the real story, I do worry about how much might possibly have been covered up or papered over by the trial. 1y

OutsmartYourShelf @Andrew65 So do I, especially as it was conveniently held whilst Bligh was out of the country & unable to testify in person. I‘m not saying he is blameless but it seems strange to not have one of the main people involved actually at the trial. 1y
Andrew65 @OutsmartYourShelf They definitely wanted this to progress quickly and punish people so that mutinies didn‘t spread to other ships. The ‘system‘ couldn‘t allow a message to spread and people to go unpunished in the extreme, but it would be good to know the actual truth. Like most things it most probably has some truth on both sides. 1y
Andrew65 Certainly a book I‘d be interested to read and your review does a good job of whetting the appetite. 1y

Pickpick

The Far Land tells the story of the mutiny on The Bounty as well as an exploration of where the descendants of the mutineers ended up, with the author visiting modern day Pitcairn Island. I found the narrative structure interesting and I think I was more taken in by the modern storyline.

Dual story of the Bounty mutineers & the author's own present-day travel to Pitcairn Island - where Fletcher Christian & the others settled. Uneven - I actually liked the travel story better than the Bounty mutineers. Narrative history is hard to do right, & Presser is a travel author - so maybe not surprising. But any story with “Massacre Day“ as a plot point will hold your interest!

ARC. Book due 3/8. Full review: https://tinyurl.com/ybjmynvr

I got my second mystery bundle from Horizon Books today, and while it‘s ok I must admit the first bundle set my expectations pretty high. That was a home run, this is maybe a double. The non-fiction looks much more interesting than the fiction. The tagged book is the second they sent me about pirate-type adventures in the south Pacific, which is pretty unusual.

Hooked_on_books Fastfood Nation is quite good. And Farewell to Arms exceeded my expectations (I had previously read The Old Man and the Sea and hated it, so admittedly they were low 😆.) 4y
ravenlee @Hooked_on_books I read the Old Man and the Sea a few months ago (fourth try over three decades) and liked it better than expected - though I expected nothing. I tried a different Hemingway years ago and bailed, but don‘t remember if it was Farewell or For Whom the Bell Tolls. I‘ll give it a try eventually! FFNation looks good, and since I haven‘t eaten fast food much at all for almost 20 years it shouldn‘t be too hard on me. 4y
