catch up for #bookedintime. I recommend all note the TW. the racism and violence is almost relentless. Secondlyit‘s quite slow and overly hung up on descriptions of place (and I usually like that!). We follow William Thornhill from a life of nothing in London through some successes to when he loses it all again and is shipped to Australia. What then follows is he and his wife finding their way inc. the horrific interactions with the native ⬇️

I learned of Kate Grenville through Litsy and have become such a huge fan. At first I wasn't that crazy about this one, but after a small break, I loved it and I was sad to see it end. She is so good at writing about this period of Australian history. 4.5 🌟

How I spent the last day of my summer school holidays. I restrained myself and only borrowed this many books from the book nook. Ha!

I read “The Restless Dolly Maunder” last year when it was on The Women‘s Prize for Fiction Longlist and I loved that book. Ever since I wanted to read more by Granville. I thought this sounded interesting, but it was not for me.

I‘m not sure if it‘s the wrong time, the translation or that‘s it due back at the library, but I read 20p maybe andI wasn‘t gripped.

I‘ll see if I try anything else by her in the future

William Thornhill makes a mistake and is shipped to Australia. He and his fellow settlers face up to life on colonised land, as slowly those indigenous to the land push back against them. There‘s a terrible sense of the inevitable, a deep frustration towards the settlers ignorance, a foreboding of what we know must come to pass. I found this incredibly well told and the tension mounts perfectly but to a really awful ending; you can‘t look away.

Just wanted to share a beautiful view from one of the apartments I clean, the beach views are amazing. 🌞
