Yes, Newsweek said that once you pick it up you won't put it down - and it's true. A crackling yet unsettling thriller that has Nazi fugitive Josef Mengele carrying out a plan to bring about the Fourth Reich, and the Jewish Nazi hunter who will stop at nothing to bring it to an end before it begins. Levin is a master at getting under your skin, taking ostensibly ludicrous plots and alchemizing them into horrifying stories. Recommended.

Bailedbailed

There might be a good story in here but it‘s, unfortunately, buried beneath clumsy, juvenile writing. The main character, who actually prays to the fuhrer like he‘s a god, is staggeringly naive and the focus is more on her forbidden romance than the history. I think I just like my historical fiction to have a little more meat on its bones, so I bailed around page 150.

Uprising | Jennifer A. Nielsen

This is another great historical fiction by Jennifer Nielsen. Set in Poland throughout WWII, it follows Lidia from the initial German invasion through the final days of the German occupation. It‘s a harrowing story of those who joined the Polish resistance. I‘ve read stories of the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto, but this was a broader story of resistance throughout the city.

Daisey If you enjoy this story and want another with a Polish setting, I also strongly recommend Sharon Cameron‘s story of Stefania Podgorska, who hid several Jews in her attic during the war. 2mo

Qualified pick, only because it does get into the weeds with respect to the level of detail in parts. But, absolutely pertinent in a world bent toward fascism.

Do mental illnesses and/or personality disorders account for mass cruelty and disregard for human life & suffering? We seem reluctant to admit normally adjusted people can join or tolerate monstrous movements and actions.

Apparently the new film covers a shorter time period.

...we passed a colourful mural that depicted the dead and disappeared....

¿Me olvidaste? asked José Carrasco, of MIR. Have you forgotten me?

¿Donde están? asked Ricardo Salinas, of the Socialist Party, who disappeared near San Antonio. Where are they?

Unexpected link to recent fiction reading (On the Calculation of Volume also feels like a rerun, sadly absent Bill Murray)
"Day one felt like Groundhog Day, the film in which a news reporter awakes each morning to a repeat of what has come before. From the outset, however, it was clear that these seven judges would take a different approach..."

(Not) a little light reading.

The Keep | F. Paul Wilson

Pickpick

What‘s not to love in this. Eastern Europe, a keep, and a vampire with a taste for Nazi blood.

Would love to find more of F. Paul Wilson‘s work, I‘ve seldom seen anything from him in Australia.

𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐜𝐡 by 𝐉𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐧 is a fascinating, horrifying tale informed by extensive research & featuring actual historical figures/settings depicting the Nazi Lebensborn breeding program. It's another gripping depiction of World War II-era terror, & the bravery & heroism exhibited by women. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pulp | Ed Brubaker

Pickpick

Let me just state this up-front. Ed Brubaker is the absolute best crime fiction writer in comics today.
This story centers on an elderly writer in 1930's New York, whose pulp stories are true events from his secret past as an outlaw in the Wild West. He must now use his gritty experiences to help fight an encroaching darkness in the present. Short, but like an arrow hitting a target dead on, this is certainly worth the ride.

TieDyeDude Hell yeah! I love this book! 11mo
