Such an emotional book. I don't know if I would have had Stefi's courage.

It's WWII and Germany has invaded Poland. The family Stefi lives with are Jews. They all get sent to the Jewish Ghetto, while Stefi, 16, is left in the apartment alone.

What an amazing historical novel about a young women who hid Jews in Poland. I felt like this story was realistic where, yes, the ending has a happier note, but still unsettled. This novel, based off of a real person, was done well and one I recommend if you are interested!

Monica5 Just put it on hold thru Libby. 14 week wait. 1y

“Fear comes with the dark when you‘re lying still, waiting for the knock on the door. And fear is not always reasonable.”

Stefania is 16 when the Germans invade Poland. She must find a way to take care of her little sister and keep 13 Jews hidden and alive in her house, all while 2 German nurses are living in her spare bedroom. This is a remarkable story based on real people. Make sure you read the authors note at the end!

This book is a suspenseful and heart wrenching historical fiction based on the true story of Polish sisters who help Jews in the ghetto and then hide 13 of them in their house. I lost track of the number of times I wondered how Stefania was going to escape capture or detection. This book clearly describes the difficulty, stress, and determination of Stefania and the others to help each other survive.

Everyone who thinks they have it rough and that life isn‘t fair should read this book! Based on a true story this is a book about the strength of a 16 year old girl and how she faces the challenges of WWII while keeping Jewish people safe. Totally moving and a page turner. Heartbreaking yes but war is heartbreaking. A must read!

Historical Fiction, WW2, Poland. Based on a true story about a 16 year old girl and her 6 year old sister that hide 13 Jewish people in their home. I am so absorbed and I'm 51% through the audiobook. The narrator is fantastic. The audiobook is free on Hoopla. If this story continues to be THIS good, I'm buying a copy and donating it to my SIL's high school ELA classroom library. Her kids will love this story. It's suspenseful and easy to digest.

This book was absolutely heartbreaking but all so powerful! Stefania is 16 and has been working for a family at their store in Poland. But their lives all change when the Germans invade Poland. Stefania is catholic but the family she has been living with is Jewish. When they are forced to go to camps and live in the Ghettos Stefania makes the choice to start hiding Jews in her attic. 13 but when the enemy shows up at her door and wants her 👇🏻

Lovesbooks87 👆🏻apartment she knows she can‘t live her 13. The remarkable courage that this teenager showed when her life, sisters and friends was on the line. She was a hero. This is a must read book in my eyes! (edited) 3y

I wish I could say this book was delightful, because it really wasn't. It was awful and terrifying and sickening, which is exactly how it needed to be. I finished this book in 3 hours without stopping and it stole all my attention from the first page, til the last. I recommend this book with every fibre of my being.

The Light in Hidden Places is only the third book I‘ve read from RW‘s book club, but I appreciate her recommendations every time. I knew the story of Stefania Podgorska and her sister already because of the movie Hidden in Silence, but nevertheless this novel was wonderfully written and very well-researched. Don‘t miss it!

The true story of a brave teen girl who hides 13 Jews in her home when the Germans invade Poland during WWII. An amazing story of heroism but also very heartbreaking at times. Cameron has written a thoroughly researched account of Fusia's life that has made Fusia's living family members proud. The characters all leap from the page because Cameron has spoken to many of them. A well flowing narrative of a story that absolutely deserved to be told.
