4⭐️ 1st book for #deweysreadathon; a nice read to start off with. I started at the start time but fell asleep at around 6:30 am and woke up about 30 minutes later. #deweyoct #readathon #childrens #middlegrade #2023 #bookreview #fiction #classics #newberyhonor #greatamericanread

BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves how are you doing on this one? I‘m stuck on about page 20 😬 I think I need to try again and switch to the audiobook. 🤔📚🎧 2y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves It's actually working pretty well for me to read a bit each day, usually 10-20 pages depending on when I actually get to sit down to read at night. I'm currently on page 170, and it'll probably take me a couple more weeks to finish at this rate. 2y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves I‘m glad that is working for you! I‘m not sure why I got stuck. I‘m definitely a little confused, but I‘m not far enough in, so of course I‘m confused! Just not oriented yet, need to give it more time to get my bearings. Hopefully the audiobook will do the trick. I‘ve been listening to podcasts instead and really need a good audiobook to dive into. smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves It's a weird book and I was definitely confused at first. Actually, even halfway through, I can't say that I understand the world she's created! I'm just along for the ride and trying not to sweat the details. 😄 2y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves that seems like a good plan! 2y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves I saw you finished the other day! How did you end up liking it? I totally failed at this one. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Need to try again. 2y
smilingshelves I liked it, I think? It was still a weird book, all the way through, and I never got a handle on the intricacies of the world. The pacing didn't help, either. We spent the first half of the book in separate worlds, then the second half felt rushed when the main characters were finally together. There were about 4 different issues they were fighting. It felt disjointed. The ending didn't land for me. The concept is intriguing, but the execution... 2y
smilingshelves Didn't work well for me. 2y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves 😬😬😬 it‘s the execution that I‘m a bit concerned about too from what I‘ve read so far, not the concept/story. I struggle a bit when a Newbery book misses the mark for me because I know I‘m not the target audience… I need to give this another chance though. Maybe after I finish the other one, I‘ll be able to tackle this one again. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves this was so much better for me on audiobook. I‘m glad I switched. Hard to believe we will have new winners again in just 3 months! 📚 (edited) 2y

This was a very quick read about a girl who went with her father to settle their homestead. It was based on true events. This was a very cute story and I enjoyed it a lot! #NewberyHonor

Another great #NewberyHonor book, about a boy and his aunt who spend a Christmas running a lighthouse. I love books that take place around Christmas, so I am happy to find another!

Reading while waiting! Still trying to get through the #NewberyHonor books I borrowed from the library for readathon weekend. This one was a quick little story about a boy who runs an errand for his mother and has to overcome his fears of the mountain over which he travels. Great for elementary readers and has some illustrations too!

This was a multi-generational story of women from the days of slavery in the US through today. Story telling was a verbal art in the beginning, and although this was a storybook I felt that aura in this telling. Fantastic illustrations as well!

Had to take a break from my longer book now that I‘m in the second half of #DeweysReadathon

To all the parents out there: this is a treasure! Written in 1933, it gained #NewberyHonor status and is a fun story about a bunny that teaches the alphabet as you read. There‘s even a song to sing! Can‘t wait to get home from our weekend away to play the song and hear it!

A grandma teaches her granddaughter about life and death.
Wonderful illustrations and a story that brings a multitude of emotions. I can see why it won a #NewberyHonor medal.

Book three #deweysreadathon

heidisreads That looks good! What year was it an honor book? 6y
keys_on_fire It was written in 1971, so I believe it would have been an honor book in ‘72. It was good! 6y
