Daisy the Ever-Dignified helped me finish this 1953 publication earlier. On the plus side, it‘s a strong call for readers to consider what words actually MEAN and the effect they produce. On the downside, Coombes often presents subjective responses as The One Great Truth—with, of course, a slew of white British dudes as exemplars. (To be fair, his dud examples are also white British dudes.) Basically, it‘s interesting, if biased and limited.

Outdoor breakfast with book. I took LITERATURE AND CRITICISM from a Little Free Library because I‘m a sucker for a Pelican (or a Penguin, or a Puffin), and it‘s proven an unexpected delight. It‘s a great book to argue with in terms of whose writing this mid-20th-century critic values and how he gauges a piece‘s worth, but he also makes a lot of interesting points in a clear, expressive style. I‘m enjoying myself over here.

This multi pager also from 1959 was folded in my little Pelican.

Ruthiella I love finding that kind of thing in books...it‘s also always interesting to read the titles and note what is still known and what isn‘t! 3y
Leftcoastzen @Ruthiella So True! A snapshot of a particular moment has a tale all its own to tell. 3y

This book as it seems, is academic in nature. Which means it discusses the topics in very much philosophy jargons. So, if you are not a philosophy student or interested in philosophy discussions, this book is not for a you. It doesn‘t really give answers, it just arises more questions.

This cover image was used in #callthemidwife 'a BBC adaptation, which I LOVE. So this little book was a must buy when I found it outside at Shakespeare and company in Paris. Excited to read it!

So I got ZERO reading done today but on the plus side I had a job interview and the entire house is now unpacked and laundry is being done and dinner is in the oven. I've been binge listening to this podcast, it's so interesting and funny I love it!

"The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:"❤️

?Full Disclaimer: Shakespeare normally hurts my head to read. He is a writer I eagerly turn to Cliff Notes for help as a companion read. I do however like this beginning stanza on #Mercy and thought it was lovely for #AugustGrrrl

readinginthedark I love Shakespeare, and I still read a lot of companion info. with his works just to be sure I'm not missing anything, so don't feel bad. It's a lot to take in. 7y

Jess_Read_This @readinginthedark Your comment made me smile with some relief! Especially coming from a Shakespeare reader! 💕 I do want to try to read more of his work. I've been contemplating this quote for a a day or two now and it's convincing me to read more if I'm still mulling over sentences by an author days later. 7y
readinginthedark I'm glad! Totally counter to most books, but I would recommend maybe watching some movie or in-person productions of Shakespeare's plays to decide where to start. I've found that I enjoy reading the plays that I like to watch more than the others, and it helps to give more context of relationships between characters. There are still some I haven't read or would like to reread, so let me know if you ever feel like a read-along! 7y
Jess_Read_This @readinginthedark I would totally be down for a read along! Especially with someone who is more familiar with Shakespeare than I am. Have you ever been to Stratford in Ontario Canada? It is known for the Shakespeare plays performed there (edited) 7y
readinginthedark I haven't! I don't get to travel very much, but that would be really cool! I've been to a few Shakespeare in the Park productions in St. Louis, and they're usually really good. I'll look at my other reading challenges and try to figure out when would be good for me to start one. Do you have one in particular you'd want to start with or a preference between drama or comedy? 7y
Jess_Read_This @readinginthedark oh geez... I've read Romeo and Juliet.. portions of Hamlet and that is the extent of my Shakespeare repertoire. How about comedy? And let's hope the jokes aren't lost on me. (edited) 7y
Jess_Read_This @readinginthedark My uncle is a huge Shakespeare buff and teaches a few courses on it. Every year he goes to Stratford. I've never been but he recommends the plays there. 7y
readinginthedark Perfect...hm...what would you say to As You Like It or Much Ado About Nothing? They are two of my favorites with great movie productions if we want to watch them before or after the read. It's been a while since I've read them, too. And would starting in October be too late for you? I'm doing readalongs for both Lord of the Rings and Mansfield Park right now, so I need a little time. Maybe that would give us some time to get other people, too? 7y
readinginthedark Also, that's really cool about your uncle. Another spot to mark on my travel wish map! 7y
Jess_Read_This @readinginthedark How about Much Ado About Nothing? I have always loved the title and should probably know the story! Lol October is perfect actually!! I love the idea of opening it up to others too. (edited) 7y
readinginthedark Awesome! I'll set a reminder on my calendar to get it figured out and let people know in September. 😊👍🏻📚🎉 7y
