RamsFan1963 @BarbaraBB It's back in the mountains of southwestern Virginia, about 45 minutes from the Virginia/Tennessee state line. It was as country as you can get, the road I lived on was called Gravel Lick Road 🤣🤣🤣 5y

RamsFan1963 @BarbaraBB Don't get me wrong, I love my home town, tiny as it was, but sooner or later I had to leave to see more of the world. It's sadly true you can't go home again, I go home when I can and it's never the same. 5y

Cinfhen Thanks for asking!!!! He‘s home, some improvement. Dr‘s are stumped and have ordered more lab work. He‘s now able to keep liquids down so they were able to discharge him with some caveats. 5y

Waterman: The Life and Times of Duke Kahanamoku | David Davis

We can beef over whether Honolulu & Waikiki can be considered small towns in the 1890s when Duke Kahanamoku was a #smalltownboy but this Hawaiian Olympic swimmer, surfer, & official waterman certainly made good. He was known as the ambassador of Aloha & had an interesting life being born before the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy & its eventual Statehood. Statues, a stamp & hobnobbing with celebrities. This book is on my #TBR.🍍

Jefferson grew up as a fairly typical #smalltownboy in the black community of Bayonne, Louisiana in the 30s and 40s: poor, little education, & hard labor on the farm. At 21, he is wrongly convicted of murder, and his godmother recruits her friend's teacher-nephew to teach him how to be a man before he faces death after a lifetime of injustice. What ensues is powerful and multi-layered: I think I'm still unpacking a lot of its implications.

gradcat @Billypar In my opinion, Haines has never written a bad book. But I tend to give Louisiana authors a lot of yardage, because I was born & raised here, and I know the kind of weird hold and, if I‘m honest, magic this state has on its denizens, and particularly on its writers. I love/hate this place, and I lived in loads of other, probably better places, and yet I always return. It‘s like a boomerang, this state.... 5y

gradcat @Cinfhen Agree 100 percent...it‘s not something one can explain, either. @Billypar I like most of the writers from my state...sometimes I think there‘s an otherworldliness about Louisiana geography, so the setting lends itself to the Southern gothic novel. 5y
