Stand alone book by him. Written in 2015. Very different to his London based Bryant and May series.
Gave me an insight into expat life‘s in Dubai. A bit of mystery , adventure and the supernatural.

I tried to finish but this book just wasn't for me. I got to 88% and gave up. The premise was interesting, but the execution felt like it was a YA style in need of refinement: choppy writing, sudden jumps to conclusions, and cliche dialog. The digital version was also full of line edit mistakes. I wouldn't dismiss this author entirely, though, good potential in future work.

I've read two of Amanda Downum's book before. Those were atmospheric, imaginative blends of high fantasy and horror and I enjoyed them a great deal. Here Ms. Downum turns to urban fantasy. The result is disappointing. The structure of the book is unruly, and the first 50-60 pages particularly unengaging. Once the story starts taking shape it becomes more engaging but all in all its not a particularly memorable book.

I am not really a science fiction reader but I really did enjoy this story. The concept and the characters were fascinating. I read it in one sitting as it held my attention and I was curious to see how it would end. The writing has great imagery and is very thought provoking. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy science fiction or those who want to stretch beyond their normal genres.

Oh boy. Squidapus is a very dedicated Squid...apus, but he could not finish this book. What starts with an interesting premise wherein the main character's best friend disappears under mysterious (and maybe magical) circumstances, turns into about 30 pages of how much the MC is in a happy asexual relationship with the love of her life, who she loves so much and gives tender cuddles and just is so in love with. It was...cloying. Just not good.

Do I think it is coincidence that this book came in the slipstream of True Detective? No. Am I still intrigued by the references the book purports to build its story on? Yes. We shall see if this is just a cheap dime novel or if there‘s something substantial at hand.
