In other audiobook news, maybe I‘m weird, but I can‘t focus on an #audiobook unless I speed it up. Even though I slowed down from my usual 2.0ish to 1.6x, it was still hard to understand Michael with the slight slur that his Parkinson‘s disease gives him. I‘ve put myself on the list for the ebook. Just FYI for other #speedfreaks. Food for thought.

mom2bugnbee Oh. My high school celebrity crush. Will definitely be reading this. 4y
Megabooks @mom2bugnbee I got about 28% in, but I was missing too much. I think you‘ll really enjoy it though. I‘m excited to get the ebook in a couple of months. 4y
SheReadsAndWrites You are an audiobook speed rockstar!! I'm new to audiobooks but my brain can't follow 2.0!!! 🤣 I'm still snail's pace audiobook girl. 🤓 4y
Megabooks @SheReadsAndWrites just saw this. 😀 I definitely live up to the #speedfreak moniker that @Cinfhen gave me! 😂 I‘m just counterintuitive to most in that I focus better at high speeds. I usually just put it at the highest speed that I can understand the narration and follow the plot. 4y

Recursion | Blake Crouch
post image

Thoughts? This is my third time trying to read this. I really liked Dark Matter - couldn‘t put it down, but the farthest I‘ve made it in Recursion is 40%. Should I push through the first half? Thanks y‘all! Love having the litsy brain trust!

The narration is excellent, so it‘s not that. And one time I tried print, too. 🤔

TrishB I‘ve not read, but I probably would be thinking this wasn‘t for me by now! 4y
Cinfhen I wasn‘t a fan/ it was a struggle for me too 🤷🏼‍♀️ but I know @BarbaraBB loved it 4y
Megabooks @TrishB yeah. I thought I‘d like it because I enjoyed DM so much. Maybe the characters aren‘t working for me? The plot? I can usually put my finger on it, but I‘m feeling a bail coming on. 4y

Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m interested to hear what Barbara has to say. Steph, too. She encouraged me to try again, but I‘m feeling a bail, and I don‘t usually try more than three times. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
Megabooks @TrishB @Cinfhen and thank you both for your opinions! They are gratefully received!! 4y
Cinfhen I know when I read it, I was distracted and I wasn‘t fully engaged. Three times is a pretty fair attempt 💗 4y
BarbaraBB Hi! Yes I loved it (and was disappointed by Black Matter) but I don‘t remember much now. Maybe I liked it so much because it was the first in its kind for me, it seemed like something that could happen to anyone at any moment, it started out so ordinary. And I was on holidays when I read it, so had a lot of time to really dive into it. All of this to say you shouldn‘t feel obliged to finish it 😉😘 @Cinfhen Your memory is incredible! 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I try to give books so many of my friends have liked a good chance, but I‘m leaning bail. 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB that is true about its unpredictability. That could possibly be what I don‘t like? Usually I can articulate why I don‘t like a book, but this one eludes me. It is amazing how outside forces can impact how we feel about a book! 💜 4y
Cinfhen I think that‘s true, Meg! And it‘s funny @BarbaraBB that I was on holiday whilst reading this book and my mind was always drifting / it was more interested in enjoying my new surroundings and I couldn‘t focus on the book. And I really REALLY liked 4y
Cathythoughts I tried it ... but it went into #hibernation ( or maybe I bailed , I can‘t remember, I must have a look at Dark Matter 4y
atla I‘ve read this one (though not Dark Matter), and from what I recall - if you aren‘t enjoying it by now, that‘s probably not going to change. For me, it was a fun, page-turnery thriller, but nothing more really. 4y
Megabooks @TrishB @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB @Cathythoughts @atla I decided to finish it very sped up. I just kind of want to know what happens. It‘s amazing how fast you can listen if you try with professional narrators. I‘m at 2.7x now, cindy. #speedfreaks 4y
SheReadsAndWrites Oh I loved this one!! And I loved Dark Matter too. His books remind me of Michael Crichton. This one was harder for me to read sadness-wise because of the daughter's death and I have a daughter the same age as the character but I get lost in the science, time travel, how could this really work? stuff. 😊 I geek out over that. 4y
Cinfhen What???? That‘s unbelievable 😱I didn‘t realize it goes that fast. Hope you end up enjoying it 4y
BarbaraBB @atla I agree, I read it as a fun thriller too. I am so curious where you‘ll end up Meg, if you like it at 2.7 speed 😃😃 4y
aa_guer2021 Just went back. This was a book I sped-read and suspended all belief and ran with it. But I gobble up sci-fi and am weird. Different strokes for different folks. I have definitely come to that conclusion! 4y
Megabooks @SheReadsAndWrites I agree that it is reminiscent of Crichton! I never particularly thought of that. I have one hour left and am enjoying it now! 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB I‘m up to 2.85x. These narrators are easy to understand and there aren‘t a lot of characters. I have about 20 minutes of actual listening left, and I think it‘s going to to be 3-3.5⭐️ so I‘m glad I stuck with it! 4y
Megabooks @ruskigurl16 you definitely have to suspend belief with this one...hopefully 😉😉 4y
BarbaraBB Wow that is amazing! I am glad you did too! 4y
Reviewsbylola Ummmm 2.85 speed is unfathomable to me. 🤣 Glad you were able to finish it though! I liked this one almost as much as DM. 4y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola I did like the second half, so I‘m glad I stuck with it! 4y

I can only do this if I‘m

1. Really used to the narrator (like Bahni Turpin)
2. Generally only professional VO artists because they speak more clearly (like Bahni Turpin)
3. And only if I‘m just listening to the book and not doing anything else besides listening to the book

#megaspeed #speedfreaks @Cinfhen

And yes, I finished the last 4.5 hours after dinner this way!

Cinfhen That‘s INSANE!!!!! #SpeedFreak #MegaSpeed 😘 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen it is kind of crazy! I listened to my first book at 1.25x four years ago. Now here I am! 🤷🏻‍♀️👍🏻👍🏻 4y
squirrelbrain Whoa- that is just ridiculous! 🤪 4y

rockpools 😂😂😂 Wow! 4y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain @rockpools what can I say, I just keep turning it up!! 😂😂 4y
Hooked_on_books I‘m not quite that fast, though I was able to cut Roots from a 30 hour listen to 15 with my standard 2x. My current listen is on 2.2. That thought of listening to it at standard speed is a little unbearable. Though with some books, that might be ok. 4y
janeycanuck Wow! I think I‘ve gone as fast as 1.7x. You are dedicated. 4y
Daisey Wow! I frequently listen at 1.5 and I think I‘ve gotten up to 2.0 a few times, but I don‘t think I‘ve gone any faster. @jewright this is relevant to our discussion yesterday. 4y
JulAnna @Hooked_on_books Roots is one of my all time favorite reads- what is the audiobook like? Cast or one narrator? Would you recommend? 4y
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books I did the same with Ducks, Newburyport, which was over 40! I listen to that one as high as 2.2, but it was too fast all ready to turn it up! 4y
Megabooks @Daisey yeah, I don‘t know how I do it, but it still makes sense, so I go with it! 4y
Hooked_on_books @JulAnna Highly recommend! It‘s a single narrator, Avery Brooks, whose rich, lush voice is like a balm in your ears. He could read an economics textbook and I‘d listen to it. Fabulous! 4y
jewright @Daisey I‘m always comfortable at 1.75, but I really haven‘t tried any faster than that, and I‘m always doing some kind of work when I listen to audiobooks. This is impressive! (edited) 4y
Megabooks @jewright thanks!! It depends on the narrator for me. I rarely go that fast, but 2.0 is my usual default! 4y
Reviewsbylola 1.25 is usually my preferred speed and I have to be doing something else too, typically it‘s cleaning. 🤪 4y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola yeah, I listen between 1.75-2.0 when I‘m cleaning, depending on the narrator. 4y

Swing Time | Zadie Smith

Look at my new listening speed @squirrelbrain I‘m getting there!! Not nearly close to @Megabooks or should I call her #MegaSpeed 😊😘😂 I‘m enjoying both book & audio @Kalalalatja not sure why this has a low Litsy rating ?!? 🤔

squirrelbrain Yay! You‘re getting there! I think @Hooked_on_books listens on double-time too.... #speedfreaks 4y
Cinfhen Hehehehe @squirrelbrain GREAT HASHTAG 💕😁🎧😆 4y
Megabooks I bailed on this book years ago, tbh. And yes, my minimum listening speed is 1.7, often I listen at 2.1 or 2.2. I don‘t like Libby/overdrive/scribd as much because you can‘t go above 2. Congratulations on your speed upgrade!! And I love the hashtag #megaspeed! 😁😁😁 4y

Megabooks @squirrelbrain I like #speedfreaks as well!! 👍🏻👍🏻 4y
Kalalalatja I think the problem for me was the writing style. I feel like Zadie Smith writes a bit pretentiously, and emotionally distant. But tbh, I can‘t really remember if I liked the book or not 🤷‍♀️ 4y
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain Yup, 2x for me! 😂 I do sometimes wish I could go even faster. 4y
charl08 I remember it as a good book, but there was an awful lot of stuff covered in it... 4y
Cinfhen I think #megaspeed and #SpeedFreaks are both awesome @Megabooks @squirrelbrain @Hooked_on_books but for now I‘m still #TurtleClass 😉Upgraded from #snailspeed 4y
Cinfhen I like that there‘s several story arcs @charl08 but I‘m still at the beginning of the book ( maybe 150 pages in) so we‘ll see if my interest starts to wane @Megabooks @Kalalalatja I‘m not finding it pretentious....Thank God 🙏🏻I‘ve had plenty of that last week 🙄 4y
Deblovestoread Love #speedfreaks! I now listen at 1.5. I had both of my brothers riding along with me and my Harry Potter book automatically started...they thought I was listening to someone speaking in tongues. 😂 4y
Cinfhen I‘m slowly getting there @kgordon18 / I‘m not sure I‘ll ever reach #SpeedFreaks status though 4y
marleed I think about all the years I listened to audiobooks and never thought to adjust the speed. Litsy taught me to consider speeding things up. My typical at home doing home stuff is 1.5 (1.25 if the narrator has a strong accent I‘m unaccustomed to). I‘m at 1.75 if I‘m out walking and singlely focused on the book. And 1.75 -2x if I‘m reading the book and listening simultaneously (my favorite thing to do!). 1x is now comically slow! 4y
Cinfhen Yeah, 1 is SOOOOOOOOOOOO SLOOOOOOOOWWWWW @marleed but I still can‘t get used to 1.5 or higher 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4y
