No Time Like the Future
No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality | Michael J. Fox
A moving account of resilience, hope, fear and mortality, and how these things resonate in our lives, by actor and advocate Michael J. Fox. The entire world knows Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, the teenage sidekick of Doc Brown in Back to the Future; as Alex P. Keaton in Family Ties; as Mike Flaherty in Spin City; and through numerous other movie roles and guest appearances on shows such as The Good Wife and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Diagnosed at age 29, Michael is equally engaged in Parkinsons advocacy work, raising global awareness of the disease and helping find a cure through The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research, the worlds leading non-profit funder of PD science. His two previous bestselling memoirs, Lucky Man and Always Looking Up, dealt with how he came to terms with the illness, all the while exhibiting his iconic optimism. His new memoir reassesses this outlook, as events in the past decade presented additional challenges. In No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality, Michael shares personal stories and observations about illness and health, aging, the strength of family and friends, and how our perceptions about time affect the way we approach mortality. Thoughtful and moving, but with Foxs trademark sense of humor, his book provides a vehicle for reflection about our lives, our loves, and our losses. Running through the narrative is the drama of the medical madness Fox recently experienced, that included his daily negotiations with the Parkinsons disease hes had since 1991, and a spinal cord issue that necessitated immediate surgery. His challenge to learn how to walk again, only to suffer a devastating fall, nearly caused him to ditch his trademark optimism and get out of the lemonade business altogether. Does he make it all of the way back? Read the book.

While Fox covers some events from earlier in his life, he focuses on life in his 50s living with PD here. Some of the early chapters seemed a little disjointed, but they‘re serving the broader picture of Fox struggling to maintain his optimism as his medical struggles become more complex as he ages. Definitely enjoyed his sense of humor. Listening to this book makes me want to pick up some of his earlier books.

His was the only poster hanging on my wall as a teenager. He was my first - and, truly, my only - celebrity crush. I remember the devastation of the early Parkinson's diagnosis announcement. What an amazing outlook on life. I always love to listen to memoirs read by the author - this one was a bit tough at times, because you could hear the struggle. But what a story. Thanks to @Cinfhen for putting it on my radar!

⭐⭐⭐⭐/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Cinfhen It really was a bittersweet read/listen! Because it was difficult to understand his narration at times. What an inspiration. I give thanks to @Hooked_on_books for putting this one on MY #ReadersRadar 2y

A very bittersweet memoir/ read. I grew up crushing on Michael J. Fox and was so jealous when he married Tracey Pollen. When MJF was diagnosed at age 28 with early Parkinson‘s Disease, I was heartbroken. It‘s clear that Michael has handled his disease with humor and grace. The love & devotion from his family is heartwarming. It‘s commendable how Michael has used his fame to advance research and resources for those suffering from Parkinson‘s. 👇🏼

Cinfhen Michael is at the point in his disease where his body is shutting down and while it could be devastating to live with the knowledge, Michael chooses to focus on all of his blessings. A true source of inspiration. #NF22 #IAmMarvelous @Riveted_Reader_Melissa although Michael J Fox would never call himself marvelous, just lucky. ❤️🙌🏻 2y
Cinfhen Thanks @Hooked_on_books for putting this one on my #ReadersRadar #Hoopla 🎧❣️ 2y
Kloves2read I read his first book Lucky, and he mentions that Tracy didn't like him, when they first started working together on Family Ties. She told him later that she thought he was cocky and arrogant. 🤣 He was so busy trying to impress her, being someone he wasn't, instead of showing her his true self. Then naturally once she got to know him they hit it off. 2y

mom2bugnbee His was the only poster on my bedroom walls as a teenager. Watching him deal with this horrendous disease has been simultaneously inspiring & heartbreaking. 💔 2y
squirrelbrain I have Lucky Man on my physical TBR shelf; really need to get to it soon…. 2y
Cinfhen So true @mom2bugnbee I can totally see Tracey thinking he was cocky until like you said @Kloves2read he showed her his true self!! They were married so young and it‘s beautiful to see their love has grown stronger through this adversity. 2y
Cinfhen I bet it‘s equally inspiring @squirrelbrain 2y
Hooked_on_books I‘m so glad you liked it! I just can‘t imagine having to think about every single step you take. That sounds absolutely exhausting to me, but he handles it with such grace. This book completely took me by surprise and I‘m so glad I read it. 2y
Bklover I‘m listening to the audio of this now and I love it. Read his first book years ago - he is inspiring! 2y

I‘ve been dabbling in & out of this memoir the last 2 weeks #Hoopla / at times it‘s physically difficult to understand Michael‘s narration as his Parkinson‘s causes him to slur his words and other times it‘s emotionally difficult to comprehend how much his life has been tested. But his optimism, love for & from his family, tenacity and humor are inspiring.

Cinfhen I‘m cheating….using this for #ReadingAfrica22 #Tanzania as MJF and his family travel there for a safari 😁 @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle (edited) 2y

He spoke so many times with such emotion, I would almost full on start crying. You could hear his voice break, and you could hear him at times almost start to cry himself. He's had an incredible and tough journey and his optimism is waning but he's filled with gratitude.

? This reminded me that there‘s always hope. He makes mistakes but keeps getting back up. If your internal monologue sucks, CHANGE IT! You are who YOU think you are.

He speaks so fast! Had to slow the playback to 1.25! I loved hearing him! He‘s still Marty McFly. His Parkinson‘s is crushing & his story is heartfelt. ?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I now feel compelled to go back and read his previous books....and watch all of the shows he has been in. I clearly haven‘t been paying attention to all that he has accomplished, but I am intrigued. I also admire Fox‘s honesty concerning his Parkinson‘s diagnosis and all the ways this progressive disease has affected his life.

In all fairness, he was my childhood crush; however, what an excellent attitude he has towards life dealing with Parkinson‘s and aging in general. This read gives a new perspective on #adversity and optimism. The audiobook even includes a chapter on the ill-fated year #2020 .

I‘ve been super excited since fist hearing about this newest book! After a particularly fraught day last week, I decided to treat myself. Sometimes, a girl just needs to order a few things online in order to make herself smile😁🤣

The guided type journal (with prompts) was an impulse that I just couldn‘t help myself. I‘m a sucker for journals & it looks interesting🙃

wanderinglynn That journal does look interesting. I‘m a sucker for journals too. 😆 3y
Crazeedi I bought that journal for my daughters for Christmas @wanderinglynn it's pretty cool 3y

I grew up watching MJF (he turns 60 this year?!?), but I‘ve never read a book by him before. Here he frankly discusses living with Parkinson‘s and having the extra whammies of a spinal surgery to remove a tumor and a fall in the post-op period. I think this is a great book for anyone living with chronic disease or disability and those seeking to understand. He‘s matter of fact, real, and has a wonderful attitude. I‘m impressed.

Kloves2read I loved his first book, Lucky Man. You should read that one next! 😊 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I enjoyed this audiobook very much. I admire how Michael J Fox has handled his PD diagnosis and is still living his life to the very fullest. He shares all of his ups and downs. His family is amazing and I have nothing but admiration for them. My mother passed from ALS on September 22, 2018. These two diseases have many things in common.

Great book! I wanted more about his past but I gather he has written other books about it. This one is mostly about present time. Love that he narrated it.

Curiouser_and_curiouser I was interested in buying this recently but I have 2 older books of his that I promised myself that I would read first before I bought this one. Glad to know it was good. I wonder how many he has written so far? 3y
Curiouser_and_curiouser He was my favorite actor as a teen, I was totally, obsessively, over the moon in love with Michael J. Fox back then, and I still have folders full of all the articles and posters I collected of his from magazines around at the time. Loved him then and still have a soft spot for him now 💜 3y
Amandajoy I loved his first memoir, but haven‘t read any of his other books. 3y

Listening to this on my way to and from work. I love his style and his little funny anecdotes. It helps me understand my moms struggle with MS as he describes his battle with Parkinson's. While they aren't the same, some of the symptoms are similar. And so random that he's like good friends with George Stephonopalous!

In other audiobook news, maybe I‘m weird, but I can‘t focus on an #audiobook unless I speed it up. Even though I slowed down from my usual 2.0ish to 1.6x, it was still hard to understand Michael with the slight slur that his Parkinson‘s disease gives him. I‘ve put myself on the list for the ebook. Just FYI for other #speedfreaks. Food for thought.

mom2bugnbee Oh. My high school celebrity crush. Will definitely be reading this. 3y
Megabooks @mom2bugnbee I got about 28% in, but I was missing too much. I think you‘ll really enjoy it though. I‘m excited to get the ebook in a couple of months. 3y
SheReadsAndWrites You are an audiobook speed rockstar!! I'm new to audiobooks but my brain can't follow 2.0!!! 🤣 I'm still snail's pace audiobook girl. 🤓 3y
Megabooks @SheReadsAndWrites just saw this. 😀 I definitely live up to the #speedfreak moniker that @Cinfhen gave me! 😂 I‘m just counterintuitive to most in that I focus better at high speeds. I usually just put it at the highest speed that I can understand the narration and follow the plot. 3y
