As she experimented with memoir, biography, and novels that contained elements of each, [Woolf] noticed that the process by which events are converted into history is inevitably distorting, for the past acquires in the telling a shape and coherence that is absent from the present. It's an observation that she expressed sharply when she came to write of her brother's death...

I could hear the water lapping almost at my heels, a flood tide rushing to glut the river. It rises and it falls, that flood, and in time it will have the barbastrelle and the brown-eared bat; it will have the Oak Eggar and the Garden Tiger; it will have the peregrine and the clattering jacks.

Hey @bookandbedandtea I mailed this book to you last week but never posted because I'm bad about that 😂 @Jerdencon The Nature of Disappearing arrived safe and sound as well!! @robinb just keeping you in the loop haha

Thoughts on another round after this one?

bookandbedandtea I have not yet read The Last Time I Lied. Sorry- I keep pushing it back for library holds coming in but I'll stop doing that now and get it done! As for future rounds: I love this and I'm happy to keep going as long as you both want to. @Jerdencon 1mo
Jerdencon Im up for more rounds too! No rush @bookandbedandtea do we want to wait until January to finish this last round since it‘s so busy with the holidays and we can start the new one in February? (edited) 1mo
TheAromaofBooks I think giving ourselves until the end of January to wrap up this round sounds like a great idea. I do love indulging in nothing but holiday romances all of December 😂 We can get back in touch in early January about picking books for a February-March-April round? @bookandbedandtea @Jerdencon @robinb 1mo
bookandbedandtea All of that works for me as well! 😊 @Jerdencon @robinb 1mo

A marriage is a private business, even for people who leave behind them such a vast litter of diaries, letters and third-party gossip. What occurs at its centre, what bonds maintain it, are not always visible, or even guessable, to the outsider's greedy eye. The sense that arises from this residue of words is of an abiding love, comprised in equal parts of affection and intellectual stimulation. My inviolable centre, Virginia called Leonard...

I liked Harbinder! I also appreciated diverse characters.

I really love gothic atmosphere, this reminded me of that. I loved the mixture of darkness and common police work. The setting was amazing!

The murderer was a bit too easy to guess beforehand but this was really enjoyable to read.

Needed something different, this had been on my TBR for a long time. I went in not remembering anything about it. I enjoyed the story and the different povs.

A charming, reflective story about a loving middle class family enjoying their annual seaside holiday. Nothing very important happens, but we find ourselves fully immersed in the importance of every moment in daily life, and the restorative power of the sea. Just lovely. This was my #ReadOrDonate selection for September.

Finished this last night in bed. A republished, somewhat old fashioned book. I found it very soothing. Very slow paced, but peaceful, clean writing. Recommended for anyone who needs a book to fall asleep to 😴

The 2nd book about the Cazalet‘s and we jump forward a year as Britain declares war on Germany. Food rations and food cards are the new normal as is bombs being dropped and the Blitz in London, but at the same time life goes on. This book focuses more on three of the kids in their teens trying to find out what to do with their life. And even when you don‘t like them because they‘re so self centered there‘s something oddly familiar about that as

Ruthiella I definitely want to try to get back to this series this year! 6mo
AnneCecilie @Ruthiella I‘ve only read the first two so far, and enjoy the series so far. I got all five for Christmas and I‘m curious to find out what happens to family 6mo
