This was an interesting book about symbols we use in writing, their history from handwritten manuscripts to modern printing, and further changes with online text. I especially enjoyed the chapters on the pilcrow, octothorpe, and manicule, all of which I also think qualify as weird words. I was not as interested in the discussion of irony and sarcasm and attempts to identify them in print.

CBee Definitely weird words! Very cool 😊 1w

The Lost Symbol | Dan Brown

Not a fan. I'm about 20% in and have lost interest. The villain is a tiresome mustache twirler. This seems like a pale copy of The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons which I loved. On to something else! It's an obnoxiously cold day in Minnesota. Perfect for coffee and books!

TheBookHippie I agree 🥶 in the Mitten on the lake too 🥶 also #allhailthebail 4mo
Prairiegirl_reading I did not like this either. I‘m not giving Dan Brown any more of my money until he personally comes to my house and gives me my money back for this one! 🤭🤭 4mo

The soul is the ultimate human mystery.

Another interesting little book. This one explores the many different beliefs about the soul. A lot of nice illustrations. Fairly quick read.

‘Symbols are the language of the mind.‘

This is a basic, brief and to the point guide to symbols that have been around throughout history. Interesting little book with lots of colorful illustrations to go along with the descriptions.

Green: The History of a Color | Michel Pastoureau
post image

I contacted a tattoo artist recently after reading Pax by Sara Pennypacker for the second time. Somehow, I ended up booking her for a *completely* different design — but one that I‘ve had in mind for years.

It‘s inspired by my love of the ocean, a tattoo by a Korean artist named Sol, and a color essay I read once, entitled “Glaucous: the Greeny Blue of Epic Poetry & Succulents.” The essay quotes the tagged.

I go for my appointment on Tuesday! 😱

Laughterhp I love that! It reminds me of my husbands tattoo (but it‘s not colored). He did the equality symbol as paint strokes. 11mo
monalyisha @Laughterhp Nice! Where did he get his done? 11mo
Laughterhp He got it In Minnesota when he was there for a month for work. He‘s been covering up another tattoo on Federal Hill for like a year. 11mo

julesG This is going to be awesome! Can't wait for you to share the finished work. (is it strange that I'm thinking of getting another tattoo now?) 11mo
monalyisha Thanks, @JulesG! It‘s been *years* since I‘ve gotten one. It feels so risky! I must just be aging. 🙈 I hope it‘s as good as I‘m imagining! 11mo
fredamans Coming from a human pin cushion, I can't wait to see it! 😉 😄 11mo
monalyisha @Laughterhp @julesG @fredamans Sadly, my artist ended up bailing on me (in the nicest way possible). She said she just didn‘t think she could pull it off. I‘ve wanted the design for so long now! Fingers crossed I find someone one day. 🌊 11mo
