It‘s here!! National Book Awards longlist week!!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳 Today‘s lists are translated lit and young people‘s lit (you‘ll have to go their website for the latter, which I don‘t follow). I‘ve actually read 2 of these, the Kang and Hunchback, and the Balle and Barrera don‘t release until November, which is always frustrating. I am loving the cover of Sleep Phase and We Computers only has 3 ratings on Goodreads, so I love seeing it elevated here.

squirrelbrain Exciting! I‘ve only read the Kang. I thought I owned Perfection, but apparently not! 🤷‍♀️ Going out for a walk this morning before the weather turns to s*** for a couple of days 😬 so I‘ll have lots of van-time to explore the list later! 😜 2h
BarbaraBB Exciting! I read Perfection, Hunchback and On the Calculation of Volume III and have We do not Part and The Remembered Soldier on my shelves! I loved the ones I read and the Dutch author is very good so I have high hopes for her book! (edited) 7m

@dabbe and @TheBookHippie - just came across this on social media and thought of you both and your passionate posting. I know we try to keep the content book related but I also want you to know - you are not alone. #silenceiscompliance

TheBookHippie Thank you. ♥️ 2w

dabbe Thanks, Shelley. I know you know that there are a LOT of us who are resisting, fighting, protesting (especially @TheBookHippie), and doing everything we can to fight for our democracy. And we know the lovely Canadians are with us on this. ♥️🇨🇦🤍 2w

Arsenic and Old Lace | Joseph Kesselring
post image

Cary Grant is my fave Old Hollywood actor (I own all 72 of his movies 😳). My fave movie of his by far is the hilarious dark comedy Arsenic & Old Lace. It was filmed in 1941 but released in 1944. During this time, Cary became a United States citizen & donated his entire salary from this movie to the war effort. Can‘t recommend it enough!

insanity runs
in his family — no it
practically gallops!

AnnCrystal 👏🏼🤩🎬😍👍🏼...LOVE Cary Grant! And I'm the worst fan, because I haven't watched all his movies nor do I own them 🤔😂...Bravo! I didn't even know that he donated his entire salary, a sweet Champion!

Excellent Haiku 👏🏼🐝👍🏼🎬🐝💖.

BBC made his life story. I so hope I get to see it one day. Have you? I read that his childhood wasn't a happy one. As an adult, he found his mother (who his father told him was dead), and took care of her 💝.
2w
AnnCrystal P.S.

I always wanted to see a continuation to Arsenic & Old Lace...a fun storyline might be where Mortimer's child or grandchild comes to own the “house“ by inheritance. It's been all boarded up and abandoned by Mortimer. The grandchild goes against the warning left by Mortimer, and plans to open a restaurant or B&B only to learn the place is haunted by the buried bodies in the basement and “the uncle.“

I'm always making up continuations 😂🎬💝.
2w
JenlovesJT47 @AnnCrystal ooh that sounds so intriguing! You should write some fanfiction! I downloaded a copy of the play today, I‘ve never read it. There are a bunch of Cary bios, I‘m not sure which one the BBC is but I‘ve seen most of them, they‘re very good. Jason Isaacs played Cary in a movie a couple of years ago, based on Dyan Cannon‘s book about him. It‘s not perfect but he did a good job. They focus a lot on his mom and their difficult relationship. 2w
JenlovesJT47 @AnnCrystal I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the bio I‘d call the “definitive” one, but it came out in the mid 2000s and I have a copy of it on DVD somewhere, I‘ll have to dig it out. The movie with Jason Isaacs is called Archie. It‘s a miniseries. They mess up the timelines of some of the dates which irked me, but other than that, I enjoyed it. Dyan‘s book is very good, as is his daughter‘s, Jennifer. Can‘t get enough of Cary. ♥️ 2w
AnnCrystal Thank You @JenlovesJT47, I will keep this screen shot for reference info...I need to become a better fan 😂👌🏼, even with my Batman obsession, I am so far behind on info. 💝🤔💝🤗💝. (edited) 2w

No I haven‘t fallen off the face of the earth I‘ve just been moving… still 🥴 But I finally got to listen to this cast audio version of Angels in America which was fantastic. I see a subscription to National Theater at Home in my future. Maybe a reward for when this moving nonsense is behind me. 🙃

LiteraryinPA I moved a month ago so I feel for you! It‘s a lot. Hope you are settled soon so you can nest with a good book! 2w
Kenyazero Moving is so much work! I moved at the end of May and I‘m definitely still in-process 😵‍💫 glad you got to take some time to enjoy an audiobook! 2w

dabbe @JenlovesJT47 The lines in this movie: #solidgold! 💛💛💛 1mo
FashionableObserver One of my favorite lines—which I alter and use all of the time: “…she worships the quicksand I walk on.” It‘s all just too good! One of my favorite movies/plays. My family was so obsessed, my little sister‘s name is Shelby Lynn! 1mo
JenlovesJT47 @FashionableObserver that‘s so cool! And that‘s one of my fave lines, too — Clairee is the best and it‘s the way she says it that‘s so funny 😅 I‘ve had lines going through my head all day. “Don‘t know whether to scratch his watch or wind his butt” 😅 1mo

FashionableObserver @JenlovesJT47 Yes! Miss Clare was a classic!! When she bought that radio station and named herself the color announcer…😩 “Would you call that grape or aubergine..?” 🤣 I. Cannot. 🤣 (edited) 1mo
FashionableObserver @dabbe I use that line a lot, too! I swear, steel magnolias has a line for everything that you will encounter in life! 1mo

Tunes blasting, cleaning house (purging and getting in all the nooks and crannies) is oddly satisfying and calming.
Weird, right?
