#OUABC Once Upon A Book Club Adult March 2018 selection

#TallahasseeSilentBookClub 11 Feb 2024

• 304 pages • first pub 2018 • fiction • historical • informative • tense • 4 Stars

Early 1943: Magda Ritter's parents send her to relatives in Bavaria, hoping to keep her safe from the Allied bombs strafing Berlin. Young German women are expected to do their duty-working for the Reich or marrying to produce strong, healthy children. ⬇️

suvata After an interview with the civil service, Magda is assigned to the Berghof, Hitler's mountain retreat. Only after weeks of training does she learn her assignment: she will be one of several young women tasting the Fuhrer's food, offering herself in sacrifice to keep him from being poisoned.

kspenmoll I so enjoyed this book when I read it. Wonderful review. 9mo
suvata @kspenmoll I learned so much from reading this book. It made me understand that not all of Germany knew what was going on and that not everyone bought into Hitler‘s propaganda. 9mo

February | Lisa Moore

February wasn‘t a great month for me, with the ER/hospital stay drama and what-have-you, so I didn‘t get nearly as much read as I‘d have liked to. But “The Taster” and “The Hate U Give” made the month worth it, among other wonderful books. #thetaster #vsalexander #thehateugive #angiethomas #monthlyrecapswithmegs

Do not walk to get your hands on a copy of this book. Run. And read it immediately. What an incredible addition to the list of WWII literature. #thetaster #vsalexander

Hoping to finish this by the end of today; as long as we‘re not overrun by people, I definitely should be able to, because once I crack it open, I don‘t want to close it! So, this is how I plan to spend my day at work: a good book and my trusty LaCroix...as usual. #thetaster #vsalexander

This is so beautifully-done so far; I was drawn in from probably the first page, honestly. I‘m hoping the next three hours are perfectly peaceful so that I can just keep reading! #thetaster #vsalexander

This is due in a few days, and there are a bunch of holds waiting, so I can‘t think of a better way to continue spending this dreary, chilly day than with another book in my blanket nest! #thetaster #vsalexander

Today's #womenshistoryreads pick is one I haven't read - but the sad history of the Magdalen Laundries shouldn't be forgotten, and fiction can provide a way in. Any readers want to weigh in on this one? #womenshistory #bookstagram #historicalfiction #histfic #herstory #ireland #magdalengirls #vsalexander

AmbityScambity I'm completely unfamiliar with this topic, but the book sounds really good. I'm looking forward to learning more about it. 8y
KCorter My book club just finished this one! It wasn't high literature, so don't expect to be floored by the writing style or even character development. The story itself was shocking and gripped my attention to the last page. It is an interesting commentary on rumor and reputation, and how assumptions can have deadly consequences. I would recommend it, but give a trigger warning for abuse in the church, rape, and alcoholism. 8y
