Heard Esther on the radio . It was from the Sydney Writers festival , not recent I don‘t think. I didn‘t realise her first book was Hideous Kinky . I saw the movie with Kate Winslett and loved it. This book is about 3 generations of women. I found it difficult at first to keep track of the characters as they had alternating chapters but finally got the hang of it. It all comes together nicely. Loved it.
I feel too much I think. I'm easily shamed; easily hurt. So I go nuclear quickly in confrontations. I do know better. I'm learning not to resist; to let it go. William Trevor is my soundtrack. He sees the things that move me. He sounds like my own thoughts. Although his plots can be unnerving, his understanding of his characters is comforting. There won't be a happy ending, but there will be an ending. And I will understand.
I liked 98% of this book. Didn‘t like Rainey‘s “romance” cause it felt Hallmark-y and unnecessary and her open ended ending. I hated how there was so much left open in the modern timeline. I loved how the dual timelines were handled, the friendships and love. There are parts of this where I wish some things were fleshed out at the end. But generally liked it
For a few years I made a concerted effort to watch as many of the nominees as possible, but even with that I only managed 30/116; some were pretty memorable though.

A tremendously reflective, thought provoking, gentle read about homes and childhoods and what it means to belong, to be grateful, to be loved. Very touching and heart wrenching.
I loved this book. It's duel timelines with Opaline, Martha, and Henry whose lives intersect around a magical bookstore 💚

I‘m way behind reading this book for #Ireland #foodandlit. But geez when I started this chapter, I decided NOT to try this allegedly Irish meal: “a fish-finger sandwich soggy with melted butter and malt vinegar”
No thanks.
I listened to the audio and it was good. I did lose focus at times, but I think I caught the main happenings in the book. Harriet also kept secrets and it took time for her to open up to Matilda. I liked her, though she did seem “gruff” at times. I liked all the characters, really. The women were pretty tough and self-sufficient – or certainly tried/wanted to be as much as they could in their time periods. Cont in comments...
I really wanted to love this. I do love the term hagitude and I am finally embracing my cronehood. But there was too much psychology and not enough mythology for me. And then the author states that there should be gathering places for women who were born as women, basically saying that it's OK to exclude trans folx in certain cases. So yeah, not great. We don't all need the exact same experience to relate.
