Monday Is One Day | Arthur A. Levine

Mehso-so

What I liked: lots of types of families represented, kids being reassured that they will get to see more of their parents more on the weekend. What I didn‘t: Only a Mon-Fri workweek is shown. This isn‘t true for a lot of us. Also, neither my kids nor I are just making it through until we see each other. They‘re having fun, learning, hanging out with friends, and I‘m doing important work. I think that is a good thing for them to see as well.

nelehelen Great job! Also i loved Long Walk to Freedom! Hope you do too! 6y
TheEllieMo Good going. The author of my current read quotes Long Walk To Freedom as a great influence on him - at the time of writing his book, he‘d read it 6 times! 6y
wanderinglynn Way to go! 🙌🏻 (In the rules, I required to be tagged on the weekly check-ins. So no, you don‘t have to tag me on all the other posts, but it does help me out if you do tag me on all posts. 😉) 6y

I made it to week 12. Once behind it is tough to catch up. I am suppose to be at 66% but my kindle app says 59%. Am I in the right spot or not? @JenP #infinitejestbuddyread. #week 12?

britt_brooke I'm reading on my kindle, too, and the percentage it's tracking does not take the footnotes into account. 8y
JenP I think that looks right but I'll have to check when I get home. @britt_brooke is right, the percentages are off bc of footnotes 8y
Kristelh Thanks 8y

#infinitejestbuddyread #week 7 on page 389 Lyle and LaMont Chu discuss the notion of fame and how it isn't an exit from any cage. Lyle says "you might consider how escape from a cage must surely require, foremost, awareness of the fact of the cage."

What role do cages play in Infinite Jest? What references to cages have you noticed? give specific examples of characters trapped in their own "cages." What types of "cages" apply to each character?

LeahBergen Addiction is (obviously) a sort of psychological cage. I definitely see Joelle's veil as some sort of cage, too. Hmm... I must ponder this more... 8y
Skeebies05 While the players can venture into the world, ETA seems a bit of a cage. So many rituals and the classroom structure. . . They are being groomed to be the perfect tennis player and then if they are good enough they are released to The Show. . . 8y
JenP @Skeebies05 interesting. I hadn't thought that but it's an interesting consideration. 8y

JenP @LeahBergen yes, I think Gately talks about this notion of Addiction as a cage. 8y
Kristelh I remember Joelle being in a cage 8y
manifestsanity All those cockroaches Orin traps under glass in his bathroom. 8y
JenP @manifestsanity good one 8y
britt_brooke The mind as a cage (suicide, addiction, recovery, the Entertainment, etc). 8y
britt_brooke Himself's films entitled Cage I-V. Cage V being the one with the "Infinite Jim" reference in the footnotes and later mentioned by Joelle. 8y
britt_brooke Also Gately's name itself contains "gate." ? 8y
Hooked_on_books Himself literally put his head in a cage to end his life. And I agree with all other posts. Good insights! 8y
JenP 1) Kate gompert's hair "lay like a cell's glossy bars across the visible half of her forehead." 2) Marathe refers to the USA as "your walled nation" 3) the various films titled Cage, 4) pg 347 gately says with addiction "you are in a cage and can only see bars in every direction." 8y
LeahBergen @JenP @britt_brooke Oh yeah! The different films with "cage" in the title! 8y
