I loved everything about this one! I may even have liked it better than Everything, Everything and The Sun is Also a Star. It was a beautiful story #YAL

Uses the old trope of unpopular high school girl taking on the popular mean girl to vie for prom queen, but with a few twists...the unpopular girl is black and gay. She's competing to earn scholarship money for college and dealing with a dead mom and a brother battling sickle cell. So while the general story line is cliché, it's a fresh, fun spin on an old tale. Really enjoyed it! #YAL
What a fantastic addition to the world of young adult lit! Great story, great characters, unique premise, and it addresses all kinds of topics about race, gender, and relationships. I loved this! #YAL #ReadBlackAuthors
I love young-adult lit that exposes readers to other cultures and to a world outside their own. This book has all kinds of heart and soul. #YAL
Excellent YA historical fiction! The author writes about a historical time frame and perspective that no history books devote time to. Told by a young, upper-class, African American girl in 1919 Washington DC, she lives through the turmoil of the Suffrage Movement, Jim Crow, the Red Scare, Spanish Flu, and race riots, all while trying to figure out her purpose. The amount of history packed into 250 page book is impressive! #YAL
Great book to end the year with! Ireland tells a riveting story with twists and turns that keep the pace moving. She creates a colorful range of characters to love and hate. Although the premise of a post Civil War world full of zombies is fantasy, the injustice and abuse suffered by minorities and women is not. Can't wait to read the sequel! #YAL
In a not-so-distant future, Muslim Americans are rounded up into internment camps when the President convinces America they are an enemy combatant and threat a threat to the nation. Eerily disturbing and powerful, this book explores the possible outcomes of unfettered nationalism and the politics of fear. The author reminds us that this is our nation...all of ours, and that massive resistance and revolution often start with a single voice. #YAL
A YA take on Jane Eyre in space...what a fantastic idea! Earth has suffered super volcano eruptions, bringing on an ice age, and humans have taken to the skies, orbiting for centuries until Earth is habitable again. In this midst of this setting, Stella, an orphan aboard the farming ship, sets out to find a better life. It was a fun read #YAL
