Rebellions are built on hope. Set in a horrifying near-future-United States, seventeen-year-old Layla Amin is forced into an internment camp for Muslim-American citizens with her parents. With the help of newly-made friends also trapped within the internment camp, her boyfriend on the outside, and an unexpected alliance, Layla begins a journey to fight for freedom, leading a revolution against the internment camp's Director and his guards. Heart-racing and emotional, Internment challenges readers to fight complicit silence that exists in our society today.

I couldn‘t have read this book at a scarier time. The author creates an all too familiar story of hate and violence in the United States when a fascist is in power. Echoes of the past, and current times. Who will speak up when nationalists and fascists take control? We are days away from an extremely consequential election in America. Days away from deciding if we will continue to be a ‘democracy‘. Fascism is here. Choose wisely. We do not⬇️

JenniferEgnor get a second chance. Vote and use every avenue you have to speak out and fight back. In the name of humanity and all that is good, refuse fascism. 1mo

So amazing, and unfortunately necessary, especially with all those new voting laws passing. I loved the book, my only thing is that in the first half, the MC made some pretty stupid choices. 5🌟

I just walked out of my neighborhood breakfast place (where I have a solo breakfast every Tuesday am and read - though it‘s getting busier in there so maybe not much longer) anyway, the old guy sort of near me was at the door, looked at the book, and put his hands up like .. like it was a gun or something?! And laughed. I don‘t understand what just happened at all. I just wished him a good day and got the hell out. #lmpbc

Bailedbailed

I haven‘t bailed on a book in a LONG time, but to be honest, I probably wouldn‘t have ever even tried to read this if it hadn‘t been something I was given for free. Between pages 112-114 is where it broke me. I just can‘t deal anymore with this almost childish, spoiled view of what something like this would really be like. It feels like a YA novel, which is not at all what I expected. 😖 Do DNF‘s count towards #BookSpinBingo? 🤦‍♀️

TheAromaofBooks Yes, DNFs totally count!! The goal is to get books off the TBR, and it sounds like this one is off, so that's good enough for me! 😂 4y
LibrarianRyan It is a YA novel....so I curious what you were expecting. I haven‘t read it yet I‘m just wondering. 4y
See All 7 Comments
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @LibrarianRyan As stated, I was given the book, so other than the synopsis on the inside cover and advanced praise on the back, I had no clues to go off of to build any real expectations. I guess what I was trying to get across is that it feels immature. The Book Thief, for example is YA and deals with similar themes, but it doesn‘t FEEL like a YA book. Hopefully that clears it up a bit. 😅 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @LibrarianRyan If you‘re planning on reading it and need a copy, I‘d be happy to send you mine if you‘d like. It‘s certainly not going to have a loving home here. 😅 4y
LibrarianRyan @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm it's an eventually, but not soon TBR. I had just heard good things. it's not my style and probably wouldn't enjoy to begin with which is why I was curious. I figured this was more standard YA and Book thief is exceptional YA. I'm just always curious why people who go against the grain feel that way, because I am usually that person going what was everyone else thinking. 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @LibrarianRyan Gotcha! 😅 I‘m definitely in the “goes against the grain” category usually when it comes to my reading tastes, so I feel where you‘re coming from. 😜 4y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Is washi tape supposed to be one of those things an author mentions to prove that they're hip and with it? If she packed the letters I guess she wouldn't have anything to give the girls. 4y

Because the first thing one would think to pack when being evicted from one‘s home would be rolls of washi tape... She laments not having room for sentimental letters from her boyfriend, but she packed some books, a notebook, pens, washi tape and a journal from Paris. Priorities, right? 🤦‍♀️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 🤦‍♀️That washi tape better prove useful down the line! 4y

I love the premise of this book. It brings about a serious issue and sets out in a near future that could very easily happen today.

Sadly for me though, the writing left a little too be desired. Sections of the story felt forced and rushed, but I still applaud the author for attacking this controversial topic.

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm This was on my July bingo card, but I don‘t think I‘m going to get to it. I‘ll have to move it to August. 🤷‍♀️ I‘m hoping I enjoy it, but after your review and a few others I‘ve read on Goodreads, I‘m a little wary. 😅 4y
Addison_Reads @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm To be honest, it's not a bad book at all, it just could have been so much more. There was a ton of potential, it just didn't quite reach the mark for me. I went in I think expecting too much. 4y

Tune in to learn more about this important work of near-future fiction which is incredibly relevant to our current political situation. We also share our current reads and some books that we think pair well with this great, YA novel. ⬇️

I re-read Samira Ahmed's Internment for @unabridgedpod--we did a Buddy Read in March, and it's our Book Club pick for April. I revisited my original review:⠀

"I was not prepared for the power of Samira Ahmed's Internment. Her novel takes place, as she says in her Author's Note, "'fifteen minutes' into America's future." ⬇️

UnabridgedPod Layla Amin and her family have been counting down on a calendar marked by the election of a racist President, the Muslim ban, and then a series of events that feels all too possible.

Layla and her parents are relocated to an internment camp near Manzanar, the site of the Japanese internment camps of World War II. They must contend with the gradual revocation of their rights as Americans, ⬇️
5y
UnabridgedPod of their segregation not only in the camp because of their Muslim faith but also into sections within the camp based on race and ethnicity. At first, Layla struggles to deny her own drive for anger and justice, but eventually she chooses to embrace her rage and to act. Ahmed builds here a world that is truly scary because it feels so possible. Pick up this book as soon as you can, and then share it widely." ⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod I feel the same upon re-reading the book. I devoured it the first time, swept away by the timeliness of the novel, and re-reading did reveal some flaws in character development, in some YA tropes that don't quite work, in a few plot points. But wow, is this a great way to enter into some deep conversations (with adults AND with teens). ⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod Ahmed powerfully confronts the historical context of the Holocaust and of Japanese internment camps during World War II, and she powerfully applies those lessons to our current political situation. ⠀
She made me consider, as a reader, just how easy it is to let ALL news blend into one level--when you're horrified by everything, how can we pay attention to the things that really matter? ⬇️
5y
UnabridgedPod This may not be a perfect novel, but WOW, is it a powerful one.⠀

What other books have you read that powerfully confront important societal issues?

This book was a little so-so for me BUT because the premise of this book is so real and heavy I'll give it a pick for Litsy! Since I am the last reader for this for our #LMPBC I'll go ahead and say I struggled a bit with this book in terms of character depth and certain scenarios. It fell too hard into YA tropes and I felt like it weighed this book down severely.
However 5 Golden Stars for the main plot! Everyone should read this.

kellyann28 @Johanna414 I will send this back to you this week 🥰 5y
TheBookKeepers Right. Jake. Let‘s talk about that wired dynamic! 5y
See All 9 Comments
kellyann28 @TheBookKeepers That whole "Wait, does he have romantic feelings for her?" build up was SOOOO not necessary. I hated every bit of it. Can he not just be a kind person in all of this and be a supporter of humankind? Ugh. 5y
TheBookKeepers Exactly. His good guy motivation arc was tainted with the perceived love interest possibility! & left him borderline creepy in some moments! 5y
kellyann28 @TheBookKeepers On a whole other note, those FEMA trailers are so small, she can hear her parents whispering on the other side of the door yet they do not hear her sneaking out at night?! REALLY?! How were they not hyper aware of her actions at the internment camp?! 5y
TheBookKeepers Yeah the parent kid dynamic was OFF. Like she is a sassy teenager always speaking her mind & vehemently independent. Had she been my kid in that predicament I would‘ve have a keen eye on her all the time! 5y
Johanna414 You‘re right - this book was VERY “YA” at times... it would have been a very different book if written for adults. I‘m looking forward to reading everyone‘s comments! 5y

Internment, by Samira Ahmed is about an internment camp the US started in the middle of nowhere. The main character gets sent there, and shows what life is like inside the camp, also becoming one of the Directors enemies while she is there, I would definitely recommend this book.

Finished this #audiobook and 🧩 at the same time! A lot of reviewers don‘t like the main character, but I found her to be strong and courageous. Some say the themes and references to what America can turn into under Trump are heavy-handed, but I disagree. Some of this is already happening, to a lesser degree, at border camps. I found it a necessary and important perspective.

It's clear why this book was on so many 2019 best YA book lists. Painful at times to read, it accurately reflects our current reality. Layla Amin & her parents are sent to an internment camp after truthfully reporting they are Muslim on the census. Physical abuse and abuse of power is rampant & it takes teenagers to stand up against the injustices. The book doesn't tie everything up in a neat bow either, but left me with much to ponder.

A reminder of what an internment camp is - and that this is currently where thousands of children are being kept at the borders(under a different name) and a fate that befell Japanese Americans during the 1940‘s. While I have some critiques of the book it would be a good way to provoke conversation with middle school aged - although YA it is not quite as nuanced as The Hunger Games for comparison. #tbrread #wintergames #teamfestivus (forgot points

#2019Book84
This book made me so angry and also terrified me. It's not a horror novel, but the events in this book could so easily happen in our country and, in some ways, already are. I can already tell that this is going to be one of those YA novels that I recommend to every teenager I know, while also encouraging them to pass it along to their parents as well.

It's difficult to express in a few characters why I hated this book so much so here goes: a stupid heroine who we're supposed to believe makes good decisions but actually makes every situation worse. A cookie-cutter supporting cast. Cliched dialogue with overly-long history lectures. The botching of a needed book on a vitally important topic.
