I remember enjoying this alternate-history novel set in post-Civil War America, where the dead rise as zombies during the Battle of Gettysburg. The story follows Jane McKeene, a young Black woman trained to fight the undead, as she navigates a world of racial tension, survival, and rebellion.

I read these diverse #Zombie titles for Scarathlon 2 years ago & really enjoyed them. The audio books were excellent too.🧟♀️

During the battle of Gettysburg, the dead get up and devour the living…the Civil War is disrupted and another battle against a new evil—the walking dead—begins. For Jane, she is living the reality of both of these wars. Her will to survive, reunite with her family, and stamp out the evil of slavery and bigotry push her forward in this new reality. I think this is an accurate imagining of what it would have been like had there been
The scene in chapter 5 immediately brings the Tuskegee Experiment to my mind. You can‘t not see the two are the same.
I‘m sure nobody ever expected the dead to get up in the middle of a pitched battle and start eating people, which is what they did at the Battle of Little Round Top. And no one expected those dead boys to bite their buddies and turn them as well. But that‘s the way life goes most of the time: the thing you least count on comes along and ruins everything else you got planned.
Some librarians were at Charleston Pride yesterday and they had three buckets of free books; this one came home with me. It‘s been on my TBR and has rave reviews. I couldn‘t resist the bookmarks. We also had a short conversation about moms 4 fascism attacking our books, and libraries. They are trying to hold it together.
1st unofficial spooky szn read while I am making my stained glass🦇 assembly line (this one is 👻tries to walk a 🦇)
A premise that easily could have been hokey; this book was fun, insightful & action packed. I really enjoyed it! Essentially a zombie apocalypse interrupts the Civil War, BIPOC are sent to combat schools to serve as “attendants” & fight shamblers. Jane is 1 of those students. Trying to help a friend, she uncovers a conspiracy.
Jane was born 2 days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, derailing the war between the states and changing the nation forever. in this new America, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the native and negro education act require a certain children attend combat schools and learn to put down the Dead
In a revisionist history where the Civil War was interrupted by the rise of zombies, a young
black girl trained to fight zombies is sent to a frontier town where she must contend with a
mercurial and racist Sheriff who runs the town with an iron fist.
Utterly engrossing YA novel (didn't know it was YA!) that I could not put down.
Book 1 of 2!

I'm always surprised by how much I end up loving books that involve zombies. I'm never surprised by how much I love books set around the time of the Civil War. Combining those two elements and throwing in a badass heroine made this one of those books that I would have read in one sitting if I hadn't been reading it out loud to a classroom full of juniors.
I am not normally one for YA but this has been on my TBR since 2019 and I am so glad I picked it up!! Set in the civil war era but with zombies, Jane is a trained companion, someone who is taught to take out zombies and be a guard for wealthy girls, but if course things do not go as planned with lots of dirty White adults looking to put others down for a better life. Fast paced with great characters this was a lot of fun even w/dark moments

Started the tagged already. I am in a bit of a book slump after reading one of my favorite books, I didn't read anything yesterday, so hoping to shake this off soon and get on it!
For a YA zombie book Dread Nation is a pretty compelling read. Set after the civil war-but only over because the dead have risen-the story revolves around Jane, a student at Miss Preston‘s School of combat. There are some fun action scenes, an interesting take on a historical time frame and a good touch of teenage bickering. It‘s not a perfect book, but it‘s a fun read with a seriously badass heroine.
I wasn't sure what I was expecting but it definitely wasn't that! I really enjoyed the take on a zombie apocalypse, the history was interesting and the false utopia was well thought out. The characters I found less engaging, there wasn't much time given to developing them so I'm not sure if I would carry on with the series
#LetterD #ManicMonday @CBee 📕 - Dread Nation
✍️ - Daniel Defoe, Anthony Doerr (also Narrator Jim Dale)
📺- Daniel Boone (loved that TV show when I was a kid)
🎤 - Mickey Dolenz
🎶 - Desperado (can you guess what my “E” band will be??
I really wanted to like this one. I just got annoythatvit was exclusively Jane being the badass. No one else can kill zombies. Everybody else sucks. I would have appreciated more character building.
Didn‘t really know what to expect from this. I don‘t read much YA fiction, and I honestly expected a cross between historical fiction and The Walking Dead. Thankfully, Ireland subverted these expectations and created a story that is largely engaging, despite some clichéd elements (I never understand why zombies can‘t be called zombies in fiction, but that‘s a small quibble).
This book collects three short stories from Irelands Dread Nation universe. If you're a fan of the series you shouldn't miss out on those. We get to know the characters better, get a deeper insight in to their past and the world they live in.
Sadly, the book is over way to fast. I had to real really slowly, to enjoy the whole thing a bit longer 😄

I‘m not going to lie, this is not what I was expecting from this book. I thought it would just be like classic zombie apocalypse style with the MC and crew going around and killing with style. I was NOT expecting the false utopia that was actually presented in this. But hey, unexpected stuff can be fun, and this was. 4⭐️
Here are my books for #bookspin and #doublespin (not tagged book, but related 😉) I'm glad to finally getting down to read the DN stories by Ireland.
The second book has just won the SERAPH prize for best debut. Ordered it yesterday and hopefully can start with it today already. I'm so curious about this one. Funny enough I just added it to this new list and it already has been chosen - a sign, maybe ?😁

Normally I can‘t wait to open my swap packages, but with today being Easter, I completely forgot. However, I loved my #SpeculativeSpringSwap from @KatieDid927 . The cup is beautiful, I‘m looking forward to a nice cuppa tea tomorrow and the books are perfect. Thank you so very much and thank you @Avanders for hosting.

This is my second time reading this and I continue to love it. And this year‘s juniors liked it way more than last year‘s class!
Dread Nation & Deathless Divide combine US history, racism and zombies for some great storytelling. The Civil War ends when zombies become the common enemy. Young Black girls are trained in combat to protect white women. Jane and Katherine are a little different though and will uncover secret settlements & scientific experiments that show whites are as scary as zombies. https://cannonballread.com/2021/10/dread-nation-and-deathless-divide-elcicco/
The Civil War ended, only because the dead rose at Gettysburg. Jane, the black child of a white mother, is sent to a boarding school that teaches black children how to protect white patrons. Needless to say, this does not end well.
This was fascinating, creepy, & uncomfortable. Jane is a spitfire & flawed, & I love her. She fights back against racism with the same anger she uses against the zombies. And a great friendship with Kate.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

This was on my #TBR before #scarathlon & #screamathon Week 2 Prompt: “Diversify Your Horror Shelf: Read a Horror Book by a Female POC” but I‘m happy it fit right in for both. I LOVED it! It was a tough week time-wise but it was hard to put down & I couldn‘t wait to see what happened to Jane & Katherine & friends. Great pacing, just horrific enough without getting too gross. I just got the follow up on ⬇️
I did pretty well on my #anywayyoureadathon goals even being slightly under the weather.
-I read for 9 hours & 17 minutes according to Beanstacker
-I finished The Dead Don‘t Drink & The Vine Witch
-I started & finished The Okay Witch
-I added & finished a quick audiobook What the Hex
-I read 3 stories in Good Southern Witches & read about 20% of Dread Nation

Four #Zombie books that I enjoyed (I just finished Warm Bodies for #ScarePairs ) & the tagged book which I am going to read for the #Screamathon Week 2 prompt: “Diversify Your Horror Shelf - Read a Horror Book by a Female POC”
The Civil War is Over. Zombies are Walking the Earth. Everything is fine…just fine…nothing to worry about, right?! In this wonderful book, we follow Jane as she tries to navigate this crazy world as a killer of the formerly alive. Oh, did I mention that one of her parents was not white? So she has other struggles along her journey. Will she survive? Will she fall victim to this world? Read this book & find out!

"See, the problem in this world ain't sinners, or even the dead. It is men who will step on anyone who stands in the way of their pursuit of power. Luckily there will always be people like me to stop them."
While telling a story of zombies taking over America, Justina Ireland makes it clear that the real evil is racism. I felt like this book really picked up in part two, but I enjoyed all of it. In the beginning it seemed like Ireland might use the YA trope of the pretty mean girl and the "I'm not like other girls" protagonist, but this was subverted as the story unfolded. I will definitely be picking up the sequel.
I decided to take part in a couple booktube readathons and filmed a TBR video. The stack in the photo is my TBR for #Summerween and the #TarotReadathon. I started reading Dread Nation yesterday and I'm looking forward to continuing it today.

This #audiobook is AMAZING. The narrator is awesome. This is alternative history post civil war with zombies. If you like to be entertained by your audiobooks (how could you not?), this definitely gets my recommendation. I was compelled to start the second one already.

Thank you, @CBee! I love everything! The Writer's Block is fantastic. How did you know I love Vonnegut and puns? A huge bag of chocolate always makes my day. I feel so spoiled. Thank you so much. 🥰

A fun read that kept me interested in the story but I'd have to say the quality of writing isn't super great. There are a few minor plot holes and some inconsistencies in details.
#ShowSomeLove Day 23: This definitely qualifies as a #FaveYAByABlackAuthor. Loved reading this aloud with my teenage girl.
I was wary of this book because I am deathly afraid of zombies but while they feature prominently, they aren't described in express detail. Which means I can easily say this was an excellent book and I'm off to buy the next!!
So I love historical fiction and historical fiction with a twist. This book appears to have zombies.... something I am incredibly scared of... wish me luck... 😦 😱

1. Tagged, about 3/4 of the way through and loving it!
2. I listen to more audiobooks now since I was home more in 2020 and as reading a physical book became harder for me.
3. I just added Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. I need to read more Neil Gaiman this year.
What a book, and i‘m a little ashamed that it took me this long to read it! Also everyone please read the acknowledgments - important information from the author there, Can‘t wait to read the sequel. 5/5

This book is amazing! It has everything in I like: a great heroine with some flaws, alternative history, real history, action and wits. Ireland does a great job telling her story and I was always looking forward to meeting Jane again. She just to cool!
