On Agoraphobia | Graham Caveney

#BookHaul
While I was in Chester, I popped into Waterstones and got the top two books, then found a lovely little indie, Books on the Walls, where I got the bottom two.
On Agoraphobia: the author's bibliotherapy led him to discover that the literary world is full of agoraphobics, and this book is about them 😰
Medusa: A 1920s weird novel set at sea 🦑
Alien Gods: Only 97 pages, but they are translations of Korean reimaginings of H.P. Lovecraft ⬇️

Bookwomble ... stories, so a must buy! 🐙
Baba Yaga, Tales of an Old Witch: a 12 page zine of poetry about BY, told by a professional storyteller 🧙‍♀️

This was a YA novel about a young man who has agoraphobia caused by anxiety. A former classmate who barely knew him when he still went to school decided she would “fix” him so she‘d have a topic for a college application essay. Since I‘ve read books before, I could guess how that would turn out but this was still a good read. Everyone is written in a sympathetic way, which is important.

This was my #BookSpin for May

I somehow managed to avoid all spoilers for this one so I enjoyed all the twists. I loved the way it embraced noir tropes and classic Hitchcock themes while also taking some unexpected turns. An agoraphobe sees something awful while spying on her new neighbors. It‘s hard to tell if stress a reliable narrator as we learn more about her history. There are slow moments, but just settle in and enjoy the ride.

Started this one last night 💚. Really excited to read this, it's different from what I've been reading. I found it used at 2nd & Charles.

A decent psychological thriller. A woman with agoraphobia likes to watch her neighbours until one day she witnesses a murder. There were a few twists in the book, one of them didn't come as a surprise. Some compare it to Gone Girl, but IMO I didn't think it lived up to that hype. Whilst I thought this was a good book, it just didn't wow me. Still a solid 3 1/2 stars though.

Bailedbailed

This book has been sitting on my shelf for years, but I always put off reading it due to all of the shitty things A.J. Finn (Dan Mallory) has done, as exposed by The New Yorker.

I finally decided to pick it up because the Netflix adaptation is coming out this month. I gave it a chance, but by the 25% mark pretty much nothing has happened and I‘m already sick of reading about Anna drinking and abusing her medication. I‘ll just watch the movie.

Penny_LiteraryHoarders That New Yorker piece was incredible to read! I never considered reading his books after reading that! 4y
candority @Penny_LiteraryHoarders Yeah! I felt very conflicted on whether I should read it, but at least I can bail on it without feeling the least bit bad! 4y
BarbaraBB And he is still quoted in blurbs of other books. I always wonder why an author would want Finn‘s opinion on the cover of their book! (edited) 4y

erzascarletbookgasm I gave this a Pan, and it was before I knew about his scandal. 🤷‍♀️ 4y
TheRiehlDeal I gave it a Pick, but now that I look back on it, I think it could of deserved a So-So or a Pan. Nothing absolutely jaw dropping at the end. And I read this book before I knew about the scandal. Now I won‘t anything he puts out. 4y
Laughterhp @BarbaraBB It blows my mind that he is still quoted on blurbs of books! I just recently read a book blurbed by him. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ (edited) 4y
BarbaraBB @Laughterhp Weird, right?! 4y
candority @BarbaraBB @Laughterhp That bugs me too! He‘s quoted on so many thrillers. I don‘t know why publishers are still working with him? 😬 4y
candority @erzascarletbookgasm So I definitely didn‘t miss out on anything! 4y
candority @TheRiehlDeal Yeah, I definitely won‘t either! There were rumours that Every Last Fear by Alex Finlay was actually written by AJ Finn, which made me hesitate to read it, but the publisher said that it wasn‘t him. It‘s hard to know if he‘ll just use another pseudonym or not 🤷‍♀️ 4y
BkClubCare I bailed on this, too. 4y
candority @BkClubCare Great minds think alike 😂 Have you watched the movie? 4y
BkClubCare @candority - no! Forgot there was a film. OBV, I didn‘t really read your comment on this post (oops 😳) (edited) 4y
candority @BkClubCare It was just released on Netflix on Friday. I watched it yesterday and was underwhelmed. I don‘t think I missed out on anything in the book! 4y
