This is not a book by a politician hoping to woo the public. I think that's why I couldn't put it down. Written long before his presidential candidacy began Obama explores his identity & childhood here. White grandparents from Kansas, a father from Nigeria, an upbringing in Hawaii & Indonesia, & his 1st trip to Africa is all included. It's less polished & more powerful because of that. There's a palpable struggle to find his footing in this world.

This book was amazing! It was so much nerdy fun to revisit this election and get the views from insiders from all of the various campaigns. The only downer is that I had this book several days before the election while finishing it a couple of days on the other side of Election Day…those Obama years where progressive thought we turned a corner seem so far away…no offense to those on the other side of the political spectrum.

JoeMo I will bluntly admit, I‘ve had quite enough of saying, “well that was the craziest fucking election I‘ve ever seen!” 🤷‍♂️😂🤦‍♂️ (edited) 3mo

I loved this so much!

Funny, smart, interesting, educational (for a political dufus such as myself, anyway) and - yup! - hopeful.

Things cannot possibly still be the same as they were in the pre-pandemic, pre-Trump White House but I truly appreciated this story, which felt like a delightful visit with a successful and humble and witty friend with a cool job.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I liked this but didn't love it. Maybe because it's an election year, I was craving some D.C. stories. I had binge watched and rewatched some of my favorite shows like West Wing and Veep, and started some I'd never seen like Designated Survivor and Scandal, but just couldn't get enough. So I listened to this audiobook and it hit the spot. Not as many Obama anecdotes as I was expecting, but a nice little sneak peak into the author's experience.

MallenNC Have you read Thanks, Obama by David Litt? He was a White House speechwriter and I remember liking his memoir. 6mo
CaliforniaCay @MallenNC Haven't read it but stacked it, thanks! 6mo
MallenNC @CaliforniaCay It‘s been a while since I read it but I remember it was funny with some good White House stories. 6mo

It didn‘t move me enough for 5 stars, but definitely a great read I would recommend to all.
