Hope Never Dies
Hope Never Dies: An Obama/Biden Mystery | Andrew Shaffer
For everyone nostalgic for the Obama/Biden administration, HOPE NEVER DIES re-casts the president and vice-president as amateur sleuths in a quirky mystery-adventure. He's an honest man in a city of thieves. He has no patience for guff, foolishness, or malarkey. He is United States Vice President Joe Biden. And when his favorite railroad conductor dies in a suspicious accident--leaving behind an ailing wife and a trail of clues--"Amtrak Joe" unwittingly finds himself in the role of a private investigator. To crack the case (and uncover a drug-smuggling ring hiding in plain sight), he'll team up with the only man he's ever fully trusted--the 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama. Together they'll plumb the darkest corners of Wilmington, Delaware, where enemies lurk around every corner. And if they're not careful, the blood on the tracks may be their own. This quirky, comic mystery begins six months after the 2016 presidential election, as Obama and Biden are struggling to define their post-White House identities--and question what truly remains of their legendary bromance. Published as a trade paperback original and designed to echo tough-guy thrillers (think JACK REACHER, LETHAL WEAPON, TRUE DETECTIVE), HOPE NEVER DIES is essentially the first published work of Obama/Biden fanfiction--and a terrific beach read for anyone distressed by the current state of affairs in Washington, DC.

Want to chuckle at the idea of Joe Biden and Barak Obama trying to play at being private eyes? This corny book is for you then.

It was fun reading this now, with Biden headed into the White House next month. Every line Obama had, I could hear his voice in my head. Kind of nostalgic, in a silly way. I don‘t know if I really believe Biden is into muscle cars, but maybe.

Sietje‘s on alert in case of squirrels, but agreed to a quick photo.

I treated myself to this year‘s David‘s Teas advent calendar. This morning is Chocolate Almond Black Tea, with a side of grapefruit juice and some Barry and Joe. This book is silly, with tons of cliche and puns, but the timing seemed good for it and I‘m sort of in the mood for something ridiculous. Also it‘s my #doublespin this month. 🤗

OK, I've been dragging my heels to read the following #popsugarreadingchallenge prompt: “a fiction or non fiction book about a world leader“. There are SO MANY great books by great leaders out there, and so many lessons I could've learned but...I admit it. I took the easy route on this one and went for something super campy with an extra side of cheese.

One more crossed off the list...I regret nothing!!

Susanita @hes7 That looks interesting. Thanks! 5y
Susanita @JaclynW @squirrelbrain That could work as true crime. But will it give me nightmares? 5y
JaclynW @Susanita I would say no. For me. It is disturbing. But it's the kind of disturbing that is almost unbelievable. Not totally stuff of nightmares. More bizarre like. If that makes sense. But. It is all real...so...? 5y
squirrelbrain No, I agree with @JaclynW - there‘s not that much about the crime itself, it‘s more focused on the history of the Mormons and how that led to the crime. 5y
JaclynW @squirrelbrain Yes. The focus is on the history. It's more journalistic-like too, not storytelling exactly. 5y

It started off cute, but didn‘t really keep my attention. I started skimming just to finish it. Campy and a bit too much. When you have a version of who the people are in your head and then read someone else‘s fictionalized version of the same people, well, it just didn‘t mesh for me. The mystery itself was okay. A bit over the top to be a cozy. But another book done for #marchunshelfing

#10 of my #14Books14Weeks, This was such a fun summer read! Funny and clever, this book really captures the bromance and humor between the former president and vice president that many of us came to enjoy ? I would categorize this as a cozy mystery. The book touches on some important and current subjects which are balanced with a little bit of "This could never happen" ? A bit of humor and a few jabs at current politicians...
