This is my first book by any of the Brontë sisters, how I made it this long without reading them I don‘t know. I know you aren‘t supposed to judge a book by its cover, but it is what made me buy this copy-the photo doesn‘t do it justice.
As for the book itself, I really enjoyed it. I loved how Jane gave Rochester trouble even while staying technically proper. The fact that she is talking to us as her reader helped me feel connected early on.

Liatrek My favorite book ❤️❤️ 7d
Chrys @Liatrek It is now one of mine as well💙 7d

Even though I completed a degree in English literature, I managed to do everything in my power to avoid reading this one. My father rather loved it and I thought he was crazy. Fast forward seven years and I am trying to read it for the first time, and I must say, I am rather enjoying it! #classics

Starting this one.

I've been using dice to roll for what books to read next to get through books I've had for so long but haven‘t gotten to. Really is helping me get rid of the tbr 🤣🤣

But anyway, I hadn't planned on being able to finish this but I'm home from work sick. So.

Hazel2019 Cool cover 😊 1mo
CoveredInRust @Hazel2019 That bird is me right before I sneeze. 🤣🤣 but yes, it's so pretty 💜 1mo

I did manage to cobble together my #BookSpin list last night before falling asleep. Yesterday was our first day post-antibiotics (two weeks of IV and four weeks of oral suspension, three times a day) and we‘re finally getting back to a normal sleep schedule! Maybe I‘ll get some more normal reading time soon.

keys_on_fire Hope your recovery goes smoothly and swiftly! 2mo
ravenlee @keys_on_fire thank you - I didn‘t realize I wasn‘t clear: it‘s my daughter. She‘s recovering from a really scary staph infection in October that necessitated two surgeries and massive amounts of antibiotics. See - I need sleep! But I do thank you for the good wishes. 2mo
Bookwomble I hope your daughter's feeling more comfortable now 💖 2mo

“Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! - I have as much soul as you, - and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you!”

Haven‘t read this book in a while, but I just love how fiery Jane can be. Also, never underestimate a woman based on just looks and money!

Oh gosh, this was lovely 🥰. This is a book I added to my #tbr from Litsy recommendations when I first joined. Glad I finally got to it, and just before the movie comes out. Will be recommending it to my own adolescent sons next.

Librariana I didn't know there'd be a movie coming out! How exciting! 😄 The author was my Creative Writing professor in college back home in El Paso 😁😊 3mo

MrsMalaprop @Librariana When I visited the US as a 12yo I met a girl called Stacey in the pool at our hotel in Anaheim. She was from El Paso & we wrote to each other for years and years. Lost touch with her a while ago 🥲. (edited) 3mo

Finished up Jane this week as well. I absolutely loved reading this with the #Pemberlittens and enjoyed the book more than I anticipated. A slow start - I was afraid it was just going to be a big misery-fest - but once Jane got off to school things got more interesting. I really liked Jane herself, although honestly I never particularly cared for Rochester, and my least favorite part of Jane's character was her obsession with his comfort. But I ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) greatly admired Jane's strength of character, her independence, and her determination to do what is right. I absolutely loved this line - “Laws and principles are not for the times when there is no temptation: they are for moments as this, when body and soul rise in mutiny against their rigour ... If at my individual convenience I might break them, what would be their worth?“ That is really fantastic writing and reveals so much about ⬇ 4mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) who Jane is as a person. I felt like the story bogged down during the whole St John thing (and seriously, who names their child SAINT anything?!) and found it hard to believe that someone who had fled temptation so defiantly would turn around and let herself be peer-pressured. I didn't hate St John as much as a lot of my fellow readers seemed to - I found him obnoxious, but also do think he was simply obsessed and single-minded in his ⬇ 4mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) thinking, not cruel or evil. Honestly, I guess I prefer Rochester because he seemed to like Jane for who she was as a person, but I found both of them to be completely self-absorbed and annoying soooooo

Anyway, I'm getting rambly, but I really enjoyed this one more than I thought I would. I'm not sure I'll reread it time and again, but it was definitely worth the time it took to get through this classic.
