I needed this. I seriously did. Part of me feels like I‘m not one of the people who gets to claim compassion fatigue because I don‘t “compassion” enough (if that makes sense), and then part of me feels like “yeah my mother had a stroke, I still fecking matter, thank you very much. I didn‘t just stop existing or having an autonomous existence 5 years ago.”

Branwen This is seriously inspiring 💙 6y
GingerAntics @Branwen right? I think we‘re always told “it‘s better do give than receive” and we‘re told to do for others first, especially if we‘re girls. (I‘m always surprised at how girls are told this so much more than boys.) It‘s amazing to really think about it and realise it actually makes NO sense. There is a reason you put your own oxygen mask on in the plane before you help someone else out theirs on. 6y
julesG Just wanted to write about the oxygen mask. Although, just because I know that I am the most important person in my life, doesn't mean that I always take care of myself first. I still have a long road ahead of me. 6y

GingerAntics @julesG you and me both. 😆 It doesn‘t help when most people still don‘t get it and want to tell you to just “have a servants attitude” and everything will be fine. 🙄 6y
Texreader I feel so fortunate I read The Virtue of Selfishness as a teenager and learned how much I can help others by helping myself. I didn‘t always remember that in my life and have had some big missteps along the way. But what an important thing to try to remember 6y
GingerAntics @Texreader there is a whole book on this? I think I may have to read it. 6y
Branwen @GingerAntics Yes, that is so true! It took my YEARS to be able to finally start saying 'no' to people. I just kept giving and giving of myself until I felt like a dry, wrung out sponge. I had just always been taught to always put others ahead of myself it wa 6y
Branwen @GingerAntics *it was completely brainwashing, you know? 6y
GingerAntics @Branwen it is, isn‘t it? It‘s horrible that we tell our little girls to just give and give and give. Boys aren‘t told this nearly as often. Then we all wonder why so many women end up staying in horrible relationships and the men their with don‘t see themselves as part of the issue. 6y

Bailedbailed

Had to bail because I had a childhood dachshund that I loved too much 😂 -- & it's pretty clear where this is going from the very beginning. I really liked the writing style, though. Has anyone read this? Is it worth going back to at a time where I feel more emotionally prepared?

MMenefee It's lovely, but I cried throughout it. 8y
Megabooks I just can't read books about animals. #compassionfatigue #veterinarianproblems I'm far to emotionally involved. 8y
LauraBeth It may be best just to skip it 🐶 8y

NatalieR It's a great book, but was a very tough read. It's totally understandable to pass on it. 8y
obeetaybee I have a long haired dachshund now, so this book will have to be a skip for me too. 8y
LitLogophile @obeetaybee haha when I read the first chapter I just said NOPE 😂 8y
Hugoreads No books or movies in which the dog dies. No matter how highly recommended. I just can't take the sorrow. 8y
Bakingbookworm I wasn't a fan of this book but I know others loved it. 8y
