I sometimes have this dream that I‘m drowning in a giant bowl of oatmeal. That‘s how I feel when I‘m at home. When I‘m at school, it‘s different. I hang out with Zach, sneak Ritz Bits crackers during class, and read horror novels in history.

Wow! July was a really bad reading month for me. I dnf‘d The Cake House and best of the month was The Other Side of Tomorrow. Sheesh, hope August is a better reading month.
pickYunho and Myunghee‘s escapes from North Korea were harrowing to read! The descriptions of their existences in North Korea and while on the run were horrible and so difficult to read. Stories like these are so important to remind us that kids (people) in this world live lives much different than ours.
(I had an issue with how Christianity was presented as a miracle, but was able to overlook it.)
pickAn amazing story of how the author was able to get her mother and brother out of North Korea after living illegally in China for a while. Very honest and eventually having a happy conclusion. Also tells of the extreme kindness of a friendly Australian. A life affirming book.
pickThis is my favourite book of the series, maybe because it‘s the first I ever read. The heartbreak was easier to get through this time around because I knew the ending and that it wouldn‘t last. It feels so much longer and so much harder the first time through. I loved this book even more the second time through. I‘m so excited to start Liv‘s book.

pickWell, this is disappointing: a book I loved listening to while painting my house but found out some problematic info about the author after finishing it. North Korean defector Yeonmi Park has been accused of fabricating some of this story. I‘m not sure what to believe but this is a book for my deep dive into North Korea. I‘m looking forward to Nothing to Envy next from @Singout ‘s #alspine list. A brutal story of survival. Conflicted pick
