Robotswithpersonality

Pickpick

The ending definitely made this one.
I knew it would be heavy in tone before I read it, and for the majority it's a hard read about hard lives, but the ending has a beauty to it, even if you see it coming, and it wouldn't have the same impact if the plot had been gentler, if different choices were made. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? The animals making up the majority of the characters in the book demonstrate straightforward concepts like the harsh cycle that is nature, and the cruelty that can be part of domestic/farm animal life, but also act as metaphors for everything from slavery to persecution, racism, various forms of othering, ostracizing, how an imposed order and rigid societal standards can make even the most downtrodden less tolerant instead of a welcoming 2w
Robotswithpersonality 3/? community, to adoption, to the sacrifices of motherhood, especially in circumstances where the children may have more opportunities than the parents, like first and second generation immigrants. 2w
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 I'm sure someone's surprised I'm not griping about how unrelentingly miserable this book is, but length is key, for this kind of tale - if it dragged out for hundreds of pages it would have been gratuitous, but it didn't.
Also: Beautiful art by Nomoco, the black and white definitely fits the mood, but there's a pleasant hint of whimsy in the shapes of the animals .
⚠️animal cruelty, animal death

I waited so long to get this book and the library and it was a good and weirdly strange story. The town is currently in fear of the Mysteries and tries to find them. The illustrations were my favorite in the book. The story however was very strange and definitely confusing at the end. There's a reason why they are called The Mysteries.

These two novels - seem to either be loved or hated. Tried Alchemist x2 book, bailed. Listened to audio all of it - still don‘t like it. Read Catcher when I was young, did nothing for me. Read it a few years ago, do not LOVE, but understand it better with its unique format and premise.

Thoughts?

ChaoticMissAdventures I didn't read the Alchemist until my 20s, and by then I had spent my late teens traveling, had gotten married and lived in 2 states with my husband. I have always thought that I had more world experience than the MC and so the book felt trite. I have always believed that some books need to be read super early before I become jaded. 😂 3mo
mrp27 I‘ve read Alchemist once, didn‘t like it and couldn‘t get into it. Read Catcher once as a teen and absolutely loved it. I want to reread but I‘m afraid an adult reread will spoil my love for it. 3mo
BooksandCoffee4Me Reading is a personal experience like eating — we can share the experiences in community, sampling each other‘s choices, but we don‘t have to order the same things in order to enjoy the shared experiences. It‘s actually encouraging when I find someone else who didn‘t care for books that are very popular and on some “should read” list. @Eggs, I‘m with you on both of these. 3mo
Kitta I read the alchemist as a teenager and found it okay, I didn‘t really see what the hype was about. The catcher in the rye I read for school (early teens) which always has a tendency to suck the life out of books for me, except for this one and 1984. Loved both of those. 3mo

What a nice story! Post apocalypse but make it hopeful. It had me crying on a plane.

My mom bought this for my daughter when she was visiting. The 9 year old at the end said, “is that all?” Although she is a child that likes to ignore me & her responsibilities like making her bed (similar to the book). I love Trevor Noah & the drawings were beautiful.

3.5/5
Quick tale for adults with interestingly weird illustrations.
Tale of the past, tale also about the future. Well-constructed, and interesting. I enjoyed the short ride.
