Was reading this for a book club I have later today and oof I do not like it at all.
so-soI have mixed feelings about this book. I love the illustrations, the story, the message. But I‘m very much annoyed by the way it was written.
Fox 8 writes a letter to us humans and asks us to be nicer to nature and it‘s animals. But he is not very good at spelling (he is a fox after all), so it is written like he hears the words. i also felt at times that he was „too cool“ in his way of speaking. It might be the translation though.

so-soThis rating is probably more a reflection on my state of mind than this novella, but I guess I just wasn‘t ready for a story told by a fox. The fox has learned human by reading on the lips, so the writing is full of mistakes.
I guess this is what can happen when you borrow a book from the library and don‘t know anything about the story.

The story combines a fox‘s perspective on human activity with some morality lessons. All in a unique linguistic patois that‘s vintage Saunders.

pickThank you for this great book @BarbaraBB ! I spent some time volunteering in wildlife rescue in North Carolina. We were rescuing them both from human encroachment and the occasional hurricane. There was and is a lot of human encroachment in Raleigh-Durham, so I found this book especially touching. 🙏🏻😊🦊😘 A great start to my birthday! 🥳🎂

In this fable about a fox who tries to save his pack from the construction of a mall & devastation of their habitat, Saunders looks at the intersection of man & nature from nature‘s POV—& what nature sees isn‘t so great. 💔Recommended.
It‘s an afternoon of chores and reading—there are definitely worse ways to spend a cold and rainy December 1st! It‘s a George Saunders short story for my next book. It‘s only 49 pages so I expect this will be a quick read.

pickA letter to the Yumans, asking them to ‘be niser‘, from Fox 8 who learnt to speak Yuman by listening to bedtime stories thro an open window.
It‘s beautifully done, not what I was expecting - a tiny book, funny, sweet, dark & no happy endings. It‘s made me want to read more by George Saunders - he has an interesting take on the world.
Reading on the seawall would be lovely if it wasn‘t so windy. I‘m still finding sand in places sand shouldn‘t be!

pickAt first glance, I thought this would be a quick, funny listen while prepping my TBR jar.
Instead, I found a humorous yet heartbreaking story, told from the POV of a fox who learned to speak “Yuman”, and has used this skill to seek an “eksplanashun” as to why people are so mean to his pack. “Danjer” arrives in the form of construction and evil people, which quickly turn Fox 8 from a day-dreamer filled with curiosity to a fearful and quaking Fox.

pickI found this book in my library‘s NEW section. I was looking for a quick read while waiting for me book subscription. The book began comical by the end I was touched and in the end sad. I think it is a great commentary.
YASS March was a significant improvement on Feb! Found my five star zone twice, stayed on track with #readharder2019 , read some quality work related reads, #indiebuddyreads was back on track after my disagreeable relationship with our Feb picks, and Tournament of Books delivered some lols. Fox 8, and The Arsonist were stars.
pickOh George Saunders I love you so. This tiny book packs an emotional punch. He always manages to make me laugh and then surprises me with a somber nugget of truth. This little parable tells of the impact humans have on the environment and reminds us that it matters how we treat our fellow creatures on the planet.

Without moralizing, this short story (in a small book) makes us think about our environment, politics, immigration and how we treat each other. Humorous and bittersweet, I recommend ‘Fox 8‘ in book format in order to see the lovely illustrations and the sweet way words are spelled. 🦊 ❤️
pickFox 8 is truly, a story of our time, and Saunders is at his absolute finest here. Fox 8 is a fable of the cruelty of humankind. In it, we are exceptional, creative, and powerful. But we are also, egotistic, selfish, unthinking, and cruel. It is a timely reminder that we are not all that inhabit this earth. Saunders writes with both humour and tenderness, constructing a story that is as confronting as it is entertaining.
A book with pictures is about all I have energy for this week. I‘m going to savor this one.
