A well-written, disappointing novel, set in the 1950s, featuring an Irish boy Traveller (similar to a gypsy) who's lived without his mom his whole life and is coming-of-age, trying to find his path. It wasn't a compelling read, especially in the middle.

This is one of the best books I‘ve read in a very long time. The writing is excellent, not only in its form but also in what in conveys about the world and the human experience. The story is engaging and romantic and will stay with me for a very long time.

Ya about a gypsy girl (I know that‘s not the preferred term now, but it‘s how the character refers to herself and her community) in Vienna at the start of wwii. Her family is taken from their home and she finds herself a prisoner but also an extra on a nazi movie set.

Overall, the book was ok. Fonseca was a bit all over the place – the chapters didn‘t really tie together. I think I didn‘t like her writing style. She included some photos of some of the various people she talked to. I suppose the most interesting to me was the chapter on the Holocaust. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin I‘m not sure any stereotypes were quenched by reading this – she said it early in the book: they lie, they steal… I found it odd. If she was trying to fight stereotypes (as other reviews are saying), I definitely missed that. I‘m still rating it ok. It held my interest, so that‘s a good thing. It just wasn‘t what I expected, and I didn‘t learn as much as I‘d hoped.

Maude If you liked the part about the holocaus you may like to read, And the Violins Stopped Playing, it tells the story of the gypsy holocaust.
