Poetry feels like a lifeline of sorts as my attention span for reading has faltered this past year and it has become a challenge to finish any book despite its initial appeal. It was concerning at first to fail so miserably at all attempts to read just one book to the last page. Then poetry happened or re-happened or somehow felt more vital. Short distillations. Pretty words. Desperate truths. Impactful & powerful, but most importantly brief…👇🏽

Nute concise and fleeting things…doable reading. It felt like a homecoming. I find myself increasingly ever more grateful for poets and their lyrical admissions that I can drift in and out of in small passages of time which baffling still feels like the utmost of my ability these days, but it is something representative of a long lasting love affair with the written word.

This quote from Carl Sandburg sums this gravitational force.

TiredLibrarian Well said. I always liked this quote from William Carlos Williams: It is difficult to get the news from poems, yet men die miserably every day for lack of what is found there. 3y
jmofo I feel this. Thank you for saying it so well. I‘m glad poetry is connecting for you, there is so much to be found in poetry. 💜 3y
Reggie This post is beautiful and yes to not being able to concentrate this year. Novellas and short stories have really saved me this year. Beautiful post. 3y
Nute @MaureenMc Thank you, Ms Maureen!💕 3y
Nute @TiredLibrarian Thank you, Friend! I like the quote that you shared. I find a wise truth contained there. Poetry is a gift to humankind with its insights and observations of the human experience. 3y
Nute @jmofo Thank you, Jessie! There has always been a connection to poetry for me, but now it feels like an urgent affinity…the light at the end of the tunnel kind of thing. Do you enjoy reading poetry? 3y
Nute @Reggie Thank you, Reggie! I should try novellas. I bet those books would work well also. Do you have some specific recommendations? 3y
jmofo @Nute I do love reading poetry! I‘m very inconsistent about it though. I like to try to write it as well, when I need to express something that is difficult to translate into prose. Do you have favorites? I‘m always looking for new poems to fall in love with. 3y
merelybookish I became a true poetry lover for all the reasons you describe when my kids were little while I was also teaching and working on a degree . One poem can pack a lot of punch and could satisfy many of my reading needs ( beautiful language, ideas, other viewpoints, etc.) 3y
Nute @jmofo I stay pretty true to poetry with regular readings. But for the past year it has been fervent. It has felt like it is everything or the only thing that allows a tangible grasp. Aah, you are a writer!🤗 If you ever want to share your poetry and prose, I would like to read it. I have many favorite poems. Many favorite poets. I have taken a shine to new poets and contemporary poetry lately…most of it is from desperate places or 👇🏽 3y
Nute @jmofo or cries out against injustices or pleas for understanding. Do you like that kind of thing? 3y
Nute @merelybookish Yes! I wholeheartedly agree! Poetry fulfills many literary desires in the face of other time-consuming demands and distractions. Thank goodness, as readers, we have reading options!🙂 3y
jmofo @Nute It is amazingly kind and generous to offer to read my writing! (My writing is not very noble or impassioned, it is a method for me to process so I‘d be willing to share but there‘s no pressure.) I am interested in hearing more about the poets who have been moving you lately. One of my all time favorites (and heroine) is Audre Lorde, although I have not read as much of her poetry. 3y
mavey So beautifully and astutely put! As Leoanrd Cohen said, Poetry is the evidence of life!🥰💝 I highly recommend Chris Ferreiras on IG and his book, The Sun Underground and All The Colours In Between if you want to explore beautifully simplistic, impactful contemporary poetry!🤗💕 3y

Day 30 - #YourStateCountry #PoetryMatters

I have been in Pennsylvania,
In the Monongahela and Hocking Valleys.
In the blue Susquehanna
On a Saturday morning
I saw a mounted constabulary go by,
I saw boys playing marbles.
Spring and the hills laughed.
And in places
Along the Appalachian chain,
I saw steel arms handling coal and iron,👇🏻

EadieB ☝🏻 And I saw the white-cauliflower faces
Of miner's wives waiting for the men to come home from the day's work.
I made color studies in crimson and violet
Over the dust and domes of culm at sunset.

I enjoyed this little excerpt from Sandburg‘s longer poem: Potato Blossom Songs and Jigs. I like this guy so much because he always surprises you with lines you would never expect to fit together. Full poem below:

Here is a link to the full poem Carl Sandburg‘s Who Am I?

“I dabble in the blood and guts of the terrible.
I know the passionate seizure of beauty
And the marvelous rebellion of man at all signs reading ‘Keep Off.‘ “

What is an Emotion as apart from an Idea? When are a Concept and a Feeling identical? Nobody knows. When do the foregoing seemingly contrasted urges of blood and brain move into a confluence with an end result of Creative Art? They‘re working on it. If or when they filch this secret from the broad bosom of Mother Nature they will have solved the mystery of what for long has been termed Genius.
